Charging Flap Open

We took delivery on our 580 a few days ago, wife loves it. We do keep getting a alert that charging flap is open, when it isn’t. Any ideas?

I had the exact same issue last week fixed on my new EQS I bought less then 2 weeks ago. The service advisor had the car for 2 days without keeping me updated. I was upset that they were just emailing the engineers without any sense of priority on a new car that they delivered with a defect. "We'll probably call you in a few days". After I got on them it turned out to be the sensor that goes into the receiver to indicate the flap is closed. They said the fix was to bend it a bit more so it goes in just a little further.

When the service people were told the fix, it was repaired like in an hour or less. I have not had the warning message since the car was returned 8 days ago.

My problem with the flap is that I keep forgetting to close it after disconnecting. After over six years of Tesla ownership, I got used to the car taking care of the flap. Wish the EQS did the same.

It’d be nice if the car would manage the charging flap. After a closer look, I can’t see anything to bend, the catch is made out of plastic.

I started getting this same error 30 to 40 seconds after starting the car and driving or when car is in reverse. I opened and shut the flap, Charged it up a little still on. Did you take your car to the dealer yet?

I haven’t taken the car in yet, it’s a small annoyance, and clears easily.

I have taken my vehicle to dealer and have received official correspondence from MBUSA regarding this issue "We apologize if the vehicle parts are not currently in stock and there is a delay in repair for your vehicle. Currently the semi-conductor shortage has impacted parts and availability for many items." It is a defective sensor, recall should be issued soon and those VINs affected they should be reaching out.

I had the open flap issue when I first got my EQS450. The dealer service center said they were in contact with engineers for the car on email. Shortly after they replied that the pin (don't remember the exact term) on the flap that meets the sensor needed to be bent ("bent" was the term they used) to closer meet the sensor. They did that and the issue has been resolved since, about 2 months.

I looked at the locking mechanism on the charging flap, it appears to be made of plastic, not really sure how to bend it. But at least it’s not really open, hit the ok button and it goes away. Like I said it a small annoyance.

I think the pin and sensor are internal and the service department has to do it.

I have an even more disturbing issue. Sometimes I can't open the flap door. Only after pressing on different spots for several minutes it opens. The false warning in the dashboard about an open door I am getting as well..

I have had multiple "flap open" warnings, though twice, the flap has opened by itself. Today, everything was fine, till I crossed the raised bumps between the lanes, then I got the warning, even though the flap was closed. Hope the recall comes out soon! I have noticed that the warnings occur more often after I have washed the car.

Never had the issue... fingers crossed...
has anyone tried to put a little lube on the mechanism? Worked for my "sticky" door handle. Might be as simple as that.

Same Here, but the warning on the screen comes on that the flap is open as soon as you start to move.

I guess the "flap open" issue is related to how the flap closed sensor is positioned and some forum members have had that fixed. The flap opening by itself must be an unrelated issue that has happened for only a few. Not sure if the user error has been ruled out, perhaps yes.

The problem is solved. The little "engine" of the Flap was broken and got replaced. No more wrong info on the dashboard and flap door opens easily now.

I just had my 580 in the shop to fix this problem. Yes, apparently a LOT of failures with this charge flap actuator. Hopefully solved.

Well, I spoke too soon! Picked my car up from the dealer yesterday after motor/actuator was replaced. Drove the car about 4 times afterward and no phantom flap. First thing this morning and every drive since, Charge Flap is Open!! Argh. I know others have said it was fixed just by 'adjusting' the sensor position and I relayed this to my service rep, but they decided to replace the actuator. Wish I could see where the sensor is located and/or included in the actuator.

Follow up: So I took my EQS 580 back to the dealer for a second attempt at getting this charge flap sensor issue fixed. And, armed with input from others on this forum, I insisted that it was unlikely to need the actuator replacement (as was done on my previous service appointment) and more likely needed some type of sensor adjustment. A senior tech came out from the shop and confirmed he's heard of this and he's found PTSS cases (Product Technical Support System). MB's solution is to 'adjust' the little black plastic post that is attached to the flap and goes into the actuator opening. I.e. they just heated up the black plastic post and bent it outwards a tiny bit, maybe 1mm or 2mm. I no longer get the erroneous flap open message and my charge flap is still as easy to close as before. Doesn't seem like the kind German engineering solution I would expect on a high end car, but clearly the design of the actuator plunger pressing against this plastic post needs a wider tolerance. Or a different design all together. I miss the way my Tesla could both open AND close the charge flap remotely. So if you take your EQS in for this problem, don't assume the service tech will find the correct solution, for the tendency may be to just replace the actuator and hope that fixes it.

I got my EQS450+ in August and it had the open flap error as I left the dealership. I brought it in the next week and they kept it a few days, then said the fix was also to bend the sensor. It worked fine until a few days ago when I started getting the error again, about 4 times, each being sure the flap was properly closed. After that day (all errors in the same day), I no longer get the errors.

I had not had a chance to fix it, but it seemed to fix itself. It was cold that day, but I don't know why it started happening again and then stopped by itself?

Your experience is what I'm afraid of, i.e. bending the plastic seems like a poor solution that will be subject to temp swings. I would think a proper solution would involve a slight redesign of the post, maybe thicken the area that presses the actuator in, or redesign an actuator with a wider open/closed tolerance. Having a sensor on the charge/gas flap can't be a new idea, surely this is a problem that has been solved long ago. Sometimes it feels like they're trying to reinvent the wheel just for the fun of it. Or save 25 cents on some part. Ok, I know I'm just whining, but really...

I hope this issue has been addressed so that future repairs fully fix this.

It would be interesting to learn just how widespread this problem is, like many others.

After being a blogger here for nearly a year, whilst I have picked up some valid and valuable hints - replacing the tachometer with a great analog clock is one - none of the complaints voiced here have surfaced on our 450+.

My car was an early build, delivered nearly a year ago, late last December; the only non-standard option I ordered is the high level air filter.
