Noise level

Checked how outside noise penetrates the cabin of my EQS.

EQS parked next to my Tesla Model S between them a noisy air compressor equal distance to both. Both cars are off and not running anything (no charging or air conditioning).
Measurement by iPhone app.

Here are the results

noise outside of the cars 75.5 dB
noise inside Tesla 49.2 dB
noise inside EQS 47.9 dB

My Tesla is model year 2014 when Tesla still cared about the quality. I think that they did many adjustments since than towards cheaper and less materials. Actually Elon was bragging that they reduced the cost by whopping 40%. I won't be surprised if today's Tesla ModelS will score even worse.
My 2023 EQS 450 4 Matic has the "laminated glass" option that allegedly reduces the noise.
For those who are not familiar with dB it is a measure of noise with lower values meaning quieter. For comparison dishwashers are in the 50-55 range. Below 50 is considered "whispering" noise level. Furthermore dB is in non liner logarithmic scale. few points mean a lot.

That's not a big difference. But I suspect the benefit of the Mercedes may be accentuated when driving. Mercedes did a phenomenal job tuning out tire/road noise and electric motor noise. Both of which I hear more when I drive a Tesla.

Point taken, but let's explain again the logarithmic nature of dB. 1-2 points look insignificant but can account for 50% more sound energy according to this statement from a professional sound engineer.

"1 dB change in a sound equates to about a 26% difference in sound energy (remember that a 3 dB difference is a doubling of energy levels). In terms of subjective loudness, a 1 dB change yields just over a 7% change. A 3 dB change yields a 100% increase in sound energy and just over a 23% increase in loudness."

Almost correct except that no need to be any professional sound engineer there, anyone can have the figures with a basic calculator.

1 dB equals to about 26% increase in linear scale. 2 dB is not 26 + 26 % but 1.26 times 1.26 = 1.59 or 59% increase in linear scale (third dB 1.26 * 1.26 * 1.26 = 2.0 or 100% increase in linear scale).

Thanks. Very nice to see that there are tech/math savvy people at this forum. Back to the original experiment. EQS is 1.3 dB quieter than Tesla Model S. It doesn't look much. However it is actually 35% quieter when converting the dB into linear.

Just the laminated glass would account for that difference in ambient outside noise.

As for Tesla, I actually think the newer Model S is a huge step forward in quality from the older models. Thats not to say it had a very high position of quality from where to start lol. EQS is a much higher quality vehicle.

The laminated glass only muffles certain frequencies. You can hear the difference, but it's not dramatic. One thing I have noticed is that since the vehicle is so darned quiet some sounds seem more pronounced. An axample is other vehicles with loud exhaust systems. The farting noises become more accentuated since no other sounds come through.

When just sitting still like that the acoustic glass makes a pretty big difference, most ambient sound you hear when stationary comes through the glass. Its definitely true though that not having certain noise amplifies other noise. Thats something EV designers have struggled with because there are no engine frequencies to block out other noises.

Yeah math is not the strong suit around here . As said dB is logarithmic, but to make it even more complicated, not all dB is the same. The basic dB is unweighted. What you wanna measure is dBA which is weighted to approximate the way the human ear hears. The human ear perceives sound levels differently.

And even at lower interior dB a car can seem louder than another with the same reading because of the frequency and amplitude of specific sounds
