Starter battery critical
know there has been at least one earlier (old) post about this but it did not include a resolution so wanted to see if anyone had any new ideas.
I suddenly got a pop up from the app and an automated email that the starter battery is critical. Note: car was not sitting idling for a long time, it was driven normally just last night, and the temp is in the 70s. Main battery charge was 40%.
Went to the garage to try starting the car. Would not start. Electronics (and even AC came in), but I did not get "ready to drive" and would not shift gears. Switched back off. Then in again - everything works.
Any idea how to avoid this in the future? Or what to do when this happens? For good measure, I'm now at a starting station charging the car, but I don't feel confident this won't happen again regardless of charge level of main battery.

I'm just upset this shattered my trust in the car. The fact that it didn't start at first is a problem for me. I need to know that when I need to go somewhere, I can get in my car and go. Especially if it's new. I know there are no guarantees, even with gasoline powered cars. Just didn't think I'd have challenges with it this soon. Hope this does not happen again.

I wasn't there and I don't know for sure but this sounds like user error. I think you psych yourself out when you got that message on the app. You said the car didn't start but you then say the electronics and AC came on which means... The car started.
It may be possible that you pressed the start button without your foot on the brake. That's honestly what this sounds like to me.
Its possible that you got in the car, pressed the start button (without foot on brake pedal), then depressed the brake pedal and tried to shift gears.
The car will do nothing if it is done this way and it wont even throw up a message telling you what you need to do.
I am not throwing shade but it sounds like the car worked just fine and you were just blinded by your presumption that you would have problems which then caused you to attempt to drive your car incorrectly.

Its a BS warning. What it should really say is; boost 12v battery, HOWEVER, since you supposedly can't open the hood.... idiotic. All you have to do is open the hood and jump the 12V in order to shift the transmission to neutral. In fact, you can simply boost the battery and, if the car starts, just drive away (if the high volt battery has enough charge). The main battery should then charge the 12V as usual. Note: the 12V doesn't charge instantly! If this happens, once you get home charge the car on a level2 till "full" since that takes hrs it will charge both batteries. What usually kills tge 12V is having the car in park with accesories (which run off the 12) running for a long time. If you wsnt to avoid that andvrun stuff for a longvtime put the car in neutral and use the parking brake. Doing so keeps the 12V charged. Many owners have suffered this issue when thy take the car to het wraps and so on since most shops are not aware about this particular quirk.

Some people call it camping mode. Not recommended if the main battery is low. Of course...There is a crazy Thai in Norway that makes vids testing that!
