Tire Maintenance

Do the tires on EV (I have 580) require regular rotation? I've read both sides of rotating regularly. Are you guys rotating your tires? How frequently? I have GoodYear Summer tires that came with the car and I've put just over 5K miles.

I have to admit I never rotate tires and with my driving style replace them because of age, not wear.

EQS 450+
Since my 450+ does not have staggered tires, I rotate every 5,000 miles and have the alignment checked. These tires cost enough without risking uneven wear. My original Bridgestone Run Flats were gone at 13,000 miles

I do not rotate tires. The cost of dismount/remount and balancing is more than any savings via longevity. The last time I bought a set of tires the mounting and balancing cost was about $200. I get about 10,000 to 15,000 miles on a set of tires or about 4 years of driving.

There is no need to dismount/remount/balance for a tire rotation. The entire tire/wheel assembly is simply placed on another location in the OEM rotation pattern recommendation. It's a matter of a few minutes for a jack/lift and lugnuts and usually costs about $20-$30. If you buy new tires at Discount Tire, they do it for free thereafter.

I was referring to dismounting the wheel, moving it, remounting the wheel then balancing. I checked my invoice and found that the cost was $25 per tire plus tax plus shop supplies (flat fee) for a total of $117. Not the $200 I remembered. Discount Tire does not have a store in my county.

I understand to what you were referring. My point is....don't do that! To rotate the tires just means moving it to a new location on the car. No balancing needed unless you have symptoms of being out of balance. Vibration in seat for a rear tire...vibration in steering column for a front tire. Certainly no need to routinely do all four with each rotation. It's not like a periodic wheel alignment where you may have tire wear without noticeable symptoms.

My wheels with tires mounted are balanced on the car. Balancing off the car does not account for rotor and hub variations. I've never owned a car with perfectly balanced rotors and hubs.

I don't know if I've ever had perfectly balanced rotors/hubs or not, as I've never experienced the vehicle symptoms that necessitated these measurements. A skilled tech using a Hunter Road Force balancing machine has produced zero perceptible vibration routinely over several cars over many years. Of course, each can choose their own process, but we wouldn't advise against or rule out tire rotation based on cost when the costs electively incurred are beyond what is needed.

That applies to anything with 4 wheels. Its not an EV thing.

I alternate summer and winter tires so they get rotated twice a year.

Sure you're not confusing 4 wheel alignment with balancing? The latest in wheel balancing is "forced balancing" though its been around for a while.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DQxVAssnbp8

I've never had my '18 E300 aligned. Every time a wheel is dismounted for tire repair (at one per year) the shop balances it after it is put back on the car.
