CarFax Branded Title Buybacl/Lemon
I have a 2016 Tesla Model S with 51,000—no major issues. While I appreciate Elon Musk for what he has accomplished, he is a wackadooo and I no longer want to drive a Tesla. I am considering a used EQS. Quite a few of the ones I have looked at on cars.com are noted in the carfax as "Branded Title Buyback/Lemon". What is the issue that caused this and should I steer away from these cars? Was it only the early 2022 cars?

As an example I bought one Porsche in 2019 where the issue was a problem with the AC unit which required replacing a thermostat. However the car had just been launched and the part had a 3 month wait. The new car owner refused to wait 3 months for the repair, so they bought the car back. For me this car was flawless and like new. I read the service history and buy back records and could see there was nothing bad. With the 2022 cars - I would imagine many will fall into this category. It's quite common on first year of production. IN fact first year buy-backs are known to be a good deal if you find the right one.

When shopping lemons/buybacks you should ask for the full service history and the buyback record. That will tell you what was fixed. In many cases it will be very minor.

There are dealers who specialize in buy-backs.

Scroll down on the CarFax and it will tell you when and WHY (what warranty item) the vehicle was bought back.
I have noticed a LOT of buybacks in 2021/22 (all makes of cars) because of >30 day waits for parts due to supply chain issues.

I'd stay away from any branded title vehicle, you'd loose your eligibility for any extended warranty coverage in the future.

Just be cautious and please get the repair records. A rattle is one thing; a motor is another. Bought a loaded 2023 EQS 580 certified sedan with 3K miles. Motor had to be replaced in my first 300 miles when it broke down driving it back to Michigan. There’s ALWAYS a reason for an early trade, and it’s usually NEVER because someone had remorse. It’s usually a frustration-filled lemon, whether buyback or dealer mercy-trade. My dealer in MN honored our 7-year relationship and desolved the deal.

It all depends on the current mileage on the vehicle. You can send me an email and I can send you the associated coverage lengths.

12V battery issues.
Mercedes has (mostly) fixed this with recent software updates. But make sure you get the car flashed with the latest OS.
Fair warning, software is the biggest issues for non Tesla (or Rivian or Lucid) EVS. If your car has a software issue, you’re stuck with it.
