Guys, don’t shoot the messenger. See with objective eyes, don’t worship at the Ev altar…

AI Overview
Learn more…

Yes, an EV car is more likely to get stranded in severe cold weather compared to a traditional gasoline car because cold temperatures significantly reduce the efficiency of its battery, leading to a dramatic drop in driving range and potentially leaving the driver stranded if they can't reach a charging station before the battery runs out.

Key reasons why EVs are more vulnerable in cold weather:
  • Battery chemistry: In cold temperatures, the chemical reactions within the lithium-ion battery slow down, meaning less power is available to the motor, impacting range.
  • Increased energy usage for heating: To maintain a comfortable cabin temperature in cold weather, EVs need to use more battery power to run the heater, further reducing range.
  • Charging limitations: Cold batteries can also take longer to charge at charging stations.

How to mitigate the issue:
  • Preheating the car:
Plug in your EV and use the preheating feature to warm up the battery before driving in extreme cold.
  • Planning ahead:
Be aware of your reduced range in cold weather and plan your trips accordingly, ensuring access to charging stations.
  • Newer technology:
Some newer EVs are equipped with heat pumps which are more efficient at heating the cabin in cold weather.

Well the relative decrease in reduction in range for an EV vs an ICE in cold weather is really a testament to the vastly superior efficiency of EV's vs ICE cars. ICE cars **** away most of the climate changing fuel energy in heat that can be diverted to cabin in the winter whereas EV's have to use energy which would otherwise be used to move the car to heat the cabin.

If an EQS580 had as much energy in it as a full tank of an S580 it would have close to 2400 miles of range.

I guess that’s the closest I will get to an apology.

Cold actually reduces resistance so electrons flow more easily. Check out videos of quantum locking using superconductors if you don't believe me (I recommend The Action Lab on YouBoob). It's the ions that slow down. So I wouldn't be surprised if range actually goes up in the winter when new battery technology gets released.

No apology nor will be there one forthcoming. You jumped into this thread by saying that if you were trapped on the highway in a blizzard you would more likely to freeze in an EV than an ICE car The video from the Norwegian guy makes clear that is not the case with the same percent of tank content.

But as a consolation I provided the following for you:

Maybe I can also send you a subscription to Climate Deniers Weekly.
