EQS Always Watching Me!

I put my EQS into Distronic mode in traffic set to 25 mph max speed, closed my eyes and pretended to sleep. Next thing I hear, some dinging noises. I open my eyes, and on the message screen, it says something like, Driver Assist: You are nodding off. Take a rest." It kept on dinging until I press the OK button on the steering wheel. I did this several times, and every time, it dinged me.

I tried it by covering my eyes with my hands, and EQS did not ding me.

Yes, there's a camera in the instrument cluster that has micro sleep detection. If it sees you closing your eyes longer than a normal blink it will alert.

This video explains the ATTENTION ASSIST in general, which is always active even if you don't use DISTRONIC. When DISTRONIC is active it monitors if the driver is still paying attention. In earlier cars that was mainly via sensors in the steering to detect input or in later models using capacitive sensors that detect if your hands are on the steering wheel. Not all models have the camera that monitors the driver's eyes, but that's where it's going.

This is the same camera that detects if you're trying to watch a video, for example, on the passenger screen.

I thought that icon was trying to tell me that my coffee was getting cold. An eyeball icon would have made a lot more sense.

Attention assist is not new, I think it was there since 2000s MBs or even 1990s. It is meant to track your steering inputs, and how many times you swerve off lane to determine your wakefulness. The eye tracking is just an extension to the attention assist. Eye tracking on MB is meant to be used for DISTRONIC so you don't have to constantly touch the steering wheel or rotate it which forum member superswiss already explained.

I don’t understand your concern. It seems to be operating properly.

I was hoping Mercedes would tell me through the voice or hammer in the head or something. I have the coffee cup in my 16" Lexus LX and also thought it wanted to offer me some coffee when I swerve in and out of lanes.
