AMG steering wheel conversion

What do you think?
I currently have the standard beige steering wheel and would love to upgrade to the AMG model. My steering wheel has heating—would a conversion be possible? The AMG steering wheel would match the option AMG Line interior, and I think black would look great. I saw a three-year-old E-Class with a beige wheel, and it looked terribly worn and dirty. My budget is around €3,000—is this realistic?

One of these you mean, https://www.ebay.com/itm/38749213586...ZTG0R2NZD570CY

I've no idea if these require coding to the car, you'd for sure want someone competent to move the airbag over from the old wheel (assuming the same part fits, otherwise you'll need to source the right one too)

It is a really nice thickness, test driving a 450+ with AMG Line sold me on finding a 450 4matic with it, which cut down my options massively, seems way less common than AMG line exterior.

My 450+ with AMG line interior and exterior has it, and it is very nice. But, mine is not heated.

Mine is heated, I don't know of an equivalent of realoem for Mercedes (exploded parts diagrams for BMWs) so don't know if there are multiple part numbers.

You can keep the airbag from your existing steering wheel as long they have the same shape. Non AMG and AMG steering wheels for the EQ class have just a different layout but the same functions and same Airbag. No coding required.
My new steering wheel is a EU production... One symbol is different on the left lower part. But it's also possible to swap this part out. But I don't care about it.

On the 580 it is heated and linked to the seat heater. To operate it induvidualy you have to use voice control.

Ok, the above is not full correct. As my knowledge today... You can keep the airbag but you need a different airbag cover for the AMG. When I get the steering wheel I'll post how / if it works. For the EQS, you can order a factory AMG steering wheel but it's in black. I need the beige version and it looks like it's not available in the US. The US airbag is a 2 stage airbag. I can order a beige leather cover with airbag but it's a EU part with a single stage airbag. I don't know if this is a good idea and if this needs coding. Worst case I have to buy a US AMG black airbag with cover and somebody hast to made a custom beige cover for it. Whatever... I like this AMG steering wheel... and I'm sure I find a solution. It's just a matter of the price now.

Can you DIY anything related to an airbag without putting insurance coverage at risk??

Be careful with aftermarket wheels. Most of them don't have capacitive touch which will make it impossible to use adaptive cruise control with self steering.

we are patiently waiting for those parts to become available. Hopefully this year. Customers have been turning off the feature for upgrade wheels.

Right but I noticed that you didn't mention the lack of a capacitive touch sensor when you offered your wheel up for sale above. So if someone bought it without asking these questions, they would be surprised when they find that one of the best features of the car no longer works. That the steering wheel upgrade turns out to be a vehicle downgrade.

it’s something that I go into detail when a message is sent. I don’t ship wheels without disclosing all the odds and ends. Been doing this for over a decade. Sold 50+ of these wheels. From what Iv seen majority of the buyers hate all the added features anyway. Don’t blame them
but to each their own.

For the modification, I should disconnect the battery, which is rather cumbersome because the positive terminal is located very far in the back. Is there a fuse that deactivates the airbag?

I’m posting these two YouTube videos here so that – whenever someone wants to swap out the steering wheel – they can see how to remove/replace the cover for the airbag.

more important thing: In the USA, you need a two-step airbag. The airbags from Europe are single-step airbags.

Here is the problem for me: As today, on the Mercedes USA website - configurator: you don't get an AMG steering wheel in beige - only in black. As soon you hit the "AMG Line" (for the 2025 EQS - $0) in the configurator and choose Macchiato Beige the configuration will change to: Black/Space Grey Nappa leather - (black) Sport steering wheel.
Retrofit: If you are looking for a black AMG steering wheel, just go to ebay an buy an AMG steering wheel with the US airbag (!) ~ USD 1,300 - you don't need to swap the cover. Its not possible to buy a cover without the airbag.

Now the steering wheel has been replaced. The touch sensor modules and the main contact plate also need to be replaced. If they are not changed, there will be a bunch of error messages. However, the effort is not significant, and now everything fits without needing to recode anything.

One more note about the airbag: Swapping the cover is a challenging process. I originally had a single-stage airbag with a leather cover but needed to keep using my dual-stage airbag. As a result, the one-stage airbag became unusable since the clips had to be cut off. Additionally, I had to cut apart the cover on my dual-stage airbag to make it work.

Wait, did you swap your wheel with EU AMG wheel and the buttons work?

how does your cruise control work?

do you need to press the ON/OFF (LIM for you) start of every new drive? Or do you just press SET and cruise controls activates?

Since I changed all the components the function are 1:1. Only one symbol is different. This is more a cosmetic thing.
