EV Home charging options

I recently learned that mercedes wall box charger will be discontinued and merc will introduce new charger compatible with tesla and the new (2025?) vehicles will have tesla compatible sockets.
I am in the market to buy a charger for my 2023 eqs.
Any guidance on what people are using to charger thier eqs?
thanks

In my opinion, the Tesla Universal Wall Connector makes the most sense. For $550, it handles both J1772 and Tesla ports.

I have no direct experience with Mercedes wall boxes.
However, this is hardware, that to a certain extent, depends on software.
And we can read everywhere in this forum about how MB tends to ignore or de-prioritize making updates to "old" software, in general.
So, I would be concerned about the useful longevity and compatibility of this box with future generations of cars.
Personally, I don't think the potential future hassle would be worth saving a few hundred bucks now.

The reason you will find several listings for a discounted Wallbox on eBay, is that MB offered these chargers free of charge to customers with 2023 EQS vehicles. I think MB's intention was to help move 2023 inventory off dealer lots in the first few months of 2024. However, the third-party company managing the promotion did not do a very good job of qualifying the application requests for the free charger. I received the charger after driving my EQS for 22 months. I sold it unopened on eBay for $550 since it did not make sense to replace my Tesla Wall Connector installed a couple of years ago. The $550 doesn't help much to offset the $3000/month depreciation hit on the EQS. It did however, cover the cost of the Tesla charger.

Charged from 20% to 80% last night and am still using my Splitvolt 24 AMP Nema 14-30 dryer outlet charger. Actually called an electrician to have a 14-50 installed and he had no idea what a Hubbel outlet was and tried to sell me an inlet connector for a gas generator instead. I thanked him for the free estimate and just bought another Parkworld 14-30 Y-splitter from Home Depot for the new house instead. I live alone so there's really no danger of accidentally using the dryer at same time. And the Y-spitter prevents me from wearing out the cheap dryer outlet. So still haven't gotten around to doing it the "right" way.

How many KW? I bought the original 110V which sits in its bag in a closet, never used. I bought the portable Ford 110/220 charger that I keep in the trunk and has worked very well.

Hey how did you manage to use the Tesla Wall Connector for charging? Did you opt for an adaptor, if so how's it working and if well, could you drop a link?

Tesla offered its Gen3 Wall Connector with a J1772 connector for a few months about two years ago. It sold for a small premium over the same unit with the standard Tesla connector. This EVSE has been superseded by the A/C Tesla Universal Wall Connector which like the Magic Dock Superchargers work with both Tesla and non-Tesla EVs. See link to this Universal EVSE in my post above.

Damn you reply fast. I also have a Tesla charger but it happens to be for the '24 S, so it would be the NACS connector. Is there anyway to preserve the existing wall mount for charging the EQS?

I would also like to point out - I have looked into adaptors like TeslaTap etc. but am still unsure of long-term safety and practicality. It seems every endorsement from customers with this product only use it short term/as backup.

The easiest thing to do is to get one of the Tesla to J1772 adapters like this.

https://ev-lectron.com/products/lect...nnectors-black

I use one at hotels where they still have the older Tesla Destination Chargers.

Tesla level 2 chargers work for any vehicle you simply need an adapter. I've had a Tesla tap for a long time. Some level 2 " destination" chargers however are "locked" by software. The home ones work for any EV.

I have used the Tesla-Tap mini for the Tesla wall charger(Gen 2) for a variety of vehicles from Audi Q5 PHEV, Genesis GV60, & currently the Mercedes EQS 580. Never had a problem with this combo. Amazon shows the Tesla Tap in both 60 & 80 amps. I got the 60 when I purchased & the Genesis would do about 11.6 like the previous Teslas. With Mercedes ramps up quickly to 9.6. Also took the adapter on several trips & used it with Tesla destination chargers for the non Teslas.

So just unplugged the dryer outlet?

I might do the same in my short term rental...

I use a Parkworld Y splitter so I don't have to unplug the dryer every time.

I have both the emporia and the MB wallbox. MB wallbox is hardwire while the Emporia is plug-in. Is there an adaptor to go from J1772 to the new standard NACS in case I get another EV?

Wondering what you settled on after all this time and how the setup is holding up for you. I was in the same boat with my EQS and decided to skip the branded chargers since things are changing so fast.

It's honestly a lifesaver having a reliable home charge instead of constantly hunting for public stalls.

In my case I decided I would start with a NEMA 14-50 socket so that I could plug in whatever EVSE I needed knowing that Mercedes was going to change charging ports in the relatively near future. That outlet can be converted to a wall mounted charger by removing the outlet from the box and changing the circuit breaker to a non-GFCI breaker (The wiring will only support 50A, but that is plenty for my charging needs). However, I am unlikely to do such a conversion anytime soon. I am thinking of getting a plug in hybrid for our rural, long distance trips, so probably should do that before Mercedes converts to NACS. Then again, I am finding that there is a lot of charging infrastructure out there, so the need for a hybrid is decreasing.
