Drive Pilot: Reliable at stationary cars?

A few years ago, my experience with Drive Pilot was that it would follow the car in front and come to a complete stop, such as at a traffic light. I didn’t test its capabilities beyond that at the time. How does it handle a stationary car at a traffic light now? Will it still come to a full stop? Even today, I’m hesitant to fully trust it in that situation or try it out.

It works the same, regardless don't trust it at anything more than speeds of 25 MPH or less. We areall aware that heavy traffic in the US is a contest of changing lanes. The system though competent has trouble avoiding lane jockies at speeds higher than that. Even the MB autonomous system that uses LIDAR is for speeds of no more than 40 or so. The million warnings that the "driving assist systems" require constant monitoring and are only an aid are annoying but more than well warranted. One thing I like less of the present system is that it tends to brake late a little too close for my comfort particularly sine you have no sight of where the front bumper is!

If we were all lane jockeys, we would be jumping into open lanes all at the same time. We need dedicated lane huggers to be good lane jockeys.

I've been doing exactly that recently, and it is so relaxing and enjoyable. Crank up Watercolors on Sirius, and relax in traffic. You get there about the same time anyway. YMMV.

First off, let's identify the systems correctly. Drive Pilot is Mercedes' latest Level 3 system. That hasn't been around years ago and is only available in Nevada and California currently. It autonomously drives the car in up to 40 mph stop & go traffic. It stops for stationary vehicles and all other obstacles. What you seem to be asking about is DISTRONIC, and it would be best for you to read the owner's manual. Your question is specifically addressed in there. DISTRONIC is designed to actively maintain the distance to a moving vehicle ahead of you and stop if that vehicle stops, and then resume when they resume. It's not designed to stop for stationary objects.
