Mercedes-Benz boss talks Tesla’s vulnerability
Automakers such as Mercedes-Benz are among the top industrial exporters out of the U.S.More critically, the automaker had successfully produced its most technologically advanced vehicle ever just as Tesla Inc.’s dramatic fall in Europe gave Mercedes-Benz an opening to woo disgruntled EV buyers looking for another option. In February, Tesla sales dropped 76 per cent in Germany as consumers soured on chief executive Elon Musk. The new sedan carries an expected €10,000 (US$10,904) premium over Tesla’s Model 3, but it may benefit from those shifting attitudes toward Musk and the car’s new internally developed and highly intelligent operating system, called MB.OS.
“I do think we have an opportunity to lure customers from other brands into Mercedes,” Källenius said on March 14 during a wide-ranging interview on a ride-along in the new car. “Whether they come from the usual suspects—competitors that we have known for 100 years—or they come from new players, we have an opportunity in both spaces.”

With 244,763 new cars registered last month, the market share for petrol dropped to 29.4%, down from 35.4% in the same month last year. Similarly, the diesel car market declined by 27%, resulting in a 10% market share for diesel vehicles last January. Overall, double-digit declines were observed in most EU markets."
