Limited Vehicle Connection

My car is currently stored in my garage in Florida for the summer months. I’ve been having problems keeping the 12 v battery charged despite connecting a NoCo trickle charger. The 12v battery slowly discharged to critical state. About the same time I got a message in the app that my car now has limited connection, meaning it no longer has an internet connection. That baffles me because all the other devices I have in my house have great internet connections. In fact I have a WiFi camera in my garage that is further away from the router than my car and it works fine. The car hasn’t moved since I left it there mid May. Is the cars internet connection dependent on the status of the 12 v battery? I’ve had the battery discharge to critical state before but never lost internet connection.

Yes, it is. It will start shutting things down if the battery gets really low to avoid further drain. Basically it's like a smartphone. If the battery gets low it goes into battery safe mode and stops certain background tasks etc. to slow down the discharge and eventually shuts off completely. So limited in this context means the same thing. It's starting to shut down processes and components to slow down the battery discharge.

How come the trickle charger does not keep the 12 V battery charged? The EQS should charge the 12 V from the high voltage battery too unless it has very old SW or if the high voltage battery SOC is too low.

Some cheap trickle chargers do not continue charging after temporary loss of mains, I'd expect Noco handling that fine though.

That’s what baffles me. It’s a very good NoCo charger which worked fine last summer. Works for a couple of weeks then stops. Never had any problems last year.
Software is up to date. SOC is at 73%. The high voltage battery did charge the 12v last summer. I had quite a bit of software updates done on my car 6 months ago to try to allow OTA map ipdates. Despite all that was done I still don’t receive any map updates OTA. Not sure if that has anything to do with car not replenishing the 12v battery as it was designed to do.

Battery health reads as good in app. It’s my second 12 v battery as well, probably 1.5 yr old.

Noco chargers are spec'd for use up to 104F (40C). I'm not sure this means they have internal temperature sensing that shuts them off above this temperature, but batteries don't charge efficiently above 104F anyway. If your garage is a toaster oven in the Florida climate, this could be the problem.

That should be fine. I have friends in Phoenix who aren't nearly that kind to their automobiles.

I don't trust Mercedes when it comes to battery health. My trickle charger stopped charging my battery towards the end of the pandemic and lit up the bad battery LED. Took it to the dealership to have them test the battery and it passed with flying colors. While I didn't have issues starting the car yet, the battery was generally always showing as partially charged in the app. I later got a different trickle charger that had a display showing the charge level and it tended to be at only 30% after only two weeks. I also typically use the Standby mode when away and it eventually complained that Standby mode cannot be activated due to the battery not having sufficient charge. Ended up replacing the battery, and now I haven't seen anything other than Charged in the app even after I haven't driven the car for a couple of weeks. Do you have somebody who can check on your Noco and see if it displays any faults?

I am fortunate to have someone check on the house and I’ve had him over checking on the car just yesterday. I haven’t noted any faults so far but I will keep a closer eye on the charger going forward. It’s reporting fully charged now and all the warnings have disappeared.

I keep 2 cars in storage over the summer. After seeing several of my tools that I keep in the garage rust because of the heat and humidity, I put in the mini split and it does a great job of keeping the humidity as well as the temperature down. Not one regret for putting it in.
