That One Feature

I never expected to use this one feature when I purchased the EQS, but I actually use it every time and repeatedly throughout my trip. And no, it's not the S+ mode, or the obvious "driving" actions. I actually use the voice command ALL the time now. I use it to switch audio input, skip to next song, navigation route (when I needed it), etc. Sometimes the speech recognition doesn't work for one reason or another, but now I realized that I actually talk to the car more than pressing buttons. I didn't realized it until a passenger brought it to my attention.

What's that one feature you thought you would never use but ended up using it the most?

I fully agree with you about the voice commands. The functionality is far more useful than I ever expected it would be. For me, with the car's default language set to English, it can occasionally be -- umm -- entertaining for others to listen to me intentionally butcher the Swedish pronunciation for some destinations so the system will understand my command. But it works!

For me, an unexpected favorite turned out to be the kick-to-open feature for the back hatch.

It has to be Intelligent mode of driving with my EQE SUV. Had not experienced this feature in any of my previous cars and did not clue into its benefits and safety feature until about 6 months of driving the car. It is even more powerful in the EQS where it recognized stop signs and traffic lights.

I tend to use kick-to-open when the emblem is dirty or have my hands full. One of my previous cars had kick-to-open but not the emblem. It is a nice feature.

How the heck do you turn off the passenger display (on the hyperscreen dash) with voice command? I've tried multiple iterations with no luck. I even asked the car "what do you call the screen on the passender side" and it gave me a long-winded answer about the "passenger display" and what it could do. When I said "turn off the passenger display" it had no clue what I was talking about. I tried "cut off"', "dim", "disable", and I don't know how many others. It makes me NOT want to use the voice control.

I had never experiended one pedal driving, but I grew to absolutely love it in traffic, and that is one thing I miss in my Panamera now. I actually have to apply the brakes myself......how inconvenient!

I find that Intelligent Regeneration handles stopping well, but that is pretty much the direct opposite of one pedal driving that you want. I find that for most driving I use IR, but on twisty mountain roads I switch to strong regeneration for one pedal like driving. IR is more energy efficient, but I need the more precise control similar to a stick shift for the mountains.

Also, regarding voice control and butchering Swedish place names, the following might be amusing:

I never did come to trust IR....always felt like no one was in control. I used strong regen in traffic, and regular the rest of the time. YMMV.

IR is actually the opposite of one pedal driving; it for when you are half asleep and half awake. One pedal driving (strong regen) is a replacement for those that drive with 2 feet. But if you are driving aggressively, you drive in strong regen and 2 feet for when you need more stopping power then what the strong regen can do.

The voice command is limiting mainly because it is developed inhouse by MB. No ChatGPT, Grok, or Gemini models or variance. Just plain old MBUX AI. It is a little disappointing but I think this will be a great selling point once we are used to talking to our humanoids. Perhaps RR will be the first to do it.

I don’t fully agree with this. At least in the US you can ask questions such as what movies are playing in the theater or definition of words… my point is there is definitely an LLM behind it.

I've asked Hey Mercedes to "Find Asian restaurants nearby" and the results she came back with were impressive. (e.g. the result accuracy was impressive, not necessarily the restaurants themselves)

I actually try to drill "Mercedes Me" about which LLM it is using, by asking the same question from different angle, using different terminology, etc. The overall common responses, was that it was created by the "MBUX AI" specifically for the use and comfort of driving a Mercedes. I even ask who the CIO of the MBUX AI division, and it asked the question.

I'm wondering if there is a way to jailbreak MBUX AI.

My favorite feature is the euro-spec ILS+ headlights that I had recoded as soon as I got the car. I drive on a lot of countryside twisty roads and hate the binary US-spec high beams that constantly toggle on and off.
