Quote: Hey whats a drive shaft loop?

It's a metal loop that goes around the driveshaft. It's required there in case the driveshaft snaps....they say it's for safety reasons, but I think they require it so the track doesn't get ripped up.

I've got a call in to Charlie, the track operations manager @ Route66
Raceway to see what he thinks.

I know they require it, so lets see what he thinks.

Here is what I found out so far. I need to confirm this with Charlie.

Roll Bars/Cages:
Roll bar mandatory in all cars (including T-tops)
running 11.00 to 11.49, in convertibles running 11.00 to 13.49. Roll
bar/cage structures must meet minimum NHRA standards as found
in 2007 NHRA Rulebook*

Driveshaft Loop: Driveshaft loop required on all vehicles running
13.99 or quicker, except vehicles running 11.49 seconds or slower
equipped with street tires.
I don't think we will hit 11.49.

Helmet:
Helmets are recommended for all drivers, but mandatory
for drivers in all 13.99 seconds E.T. or quicker vehicles. Helmet must
meet SNELL 2000 or better standards (A label inside the helmet is
proof of SNELL acceptance.)

Jerry,

I haven't seen the '07 rulebook, looks like the gave the rollbar an update from the '06 (where it was required for 11.99). The rules seem to have gotten much better. I didn't mean to rain on anyone's parade - just looking out!

Thanks bud! I'm glad you said something or else I would have not called. I'm still waiting for a call back to verify the rules.

Are you going to try to come?

Hey Marcus,
Do you mean Great Lakes Drag in Union Grove when you say "GLD" If so, I was there last week and my "tech" took 15 secs, he just looked at the car, and I was running high 11's and low 12 all nite...no shaft loop, even forgot helmet on first two passes...

I should be there in my stock E55.

AFAIK, driveshaft loop required only on slick-shod cars.

Update:
Talked to Charlie at Route 66 Raceway.

He said that any car running better than a 13.99 will need a helmet. He also said that any car running Nitrous will need a jacket.

Drivers must wear pants and shoes (No sandals) with at least a T-Shirt. No wife beaters!

They open at 9ish but we will not be able to drive until 10:30 because of a small event. They will not close until 6 and they try to give everyone at least 3 runs.

If you need a helmet, there is a shop in downtown Joliet that sells them, or you can buy them online - HERE. The helmet must meet SNELL 2000 standards. They have one for $149.95. Here it is.

Let me know if you want to buy your own....if not, maybe we can go in on a few to bring with us.

There is a store in Joliet that is near the track. They have G-Force helmets for $149 and they are open Saturday @ 9:00AM.

http://www.winnerscircleonline.com

You can't order on the website, but you can see the addresses & numbers to their Chicagoland locations.

The G-Force Helmet will look like this.

Spoke to Charlie....the only thing that will be required is a helmet for those cars running 13.99 and faster. If you are going to use nitrous, you will need a single layer jacket.
