Wait really ? We can't get 10 people to pick a day?

I dont understand. Lets take it off the board - send a mass email to those interested and lets do it.

Lets try for August if people need more time to arrange - but to call the entire trip off is silly.

Will be me, my friend, my dad, and the police from last time.

thats 4.

We could still do the open boat. Whoever shows up, shows up. It's about $50 a head including gear and bait.

I'll be shipping off from LBI end of July.

still would have preferred more private like the last 2 times. I just don't feel comfortable going on a small fishing boat with a bunch of people I don't know.

There really is no chance?

No one really wants to see your small dinghy on a private boat either, Chucky.

If we're going to do anything, I agree with Rick - say we'll be on a public boat, and just whoever shows up gets to get drunk and not catch any fish that day. Too many people end up being no-shows on this thing.

Chucky, there is no problem if you underwrite the trip. Or at least the deposit.

I'll give you the mailing address.

Loads of mega-millionaires here, right?

I didn't mean you guys. I meant strangers.

My idea was simple. Everyone that says YES now - has to send in a deposit NOW. Not when they go on a boat. Now. (It should have been done a month ago...)

If you don't show up - you don't get your money back.

That way Rick doesn't lose money.

I agree - too many people said they were coming and then bailed. Thats where the no refund deposit comes in. If people aren't willing to pony up in advance, then the trip can be canceled - but the idea wasn't entertained.

Again...see above.

A month ago - when we talked about the idea of fishing - I suggested people send in their deposit to gaurantee the spot.

Say 10 people committed to the trip.

The boat cost $800 with tip.

You tell everyone it is $80 / person.

Everyone sends you their $80 if they truly want to go. Unless their is a reason that is completely out of their control - the money is NOT refundable.

Say 2 people do NOT show. You already have their money. If those 2 people were not going to show to begin with - and did not send in their money - you'd have known it would be $100 per person and could then proceed with asking if this was something everyone still wanted to do.

It would NEVER put you in the position to be on a boat - with money short - and surprises galore.

But nobody is going to paypal me cash, maybe aside from you.

Dangeli still owes me $75 two years ago.

Again, it is $850 for 15 people, plus tip. That's $1000 all in.

Then if no one will pony up in advance, its a no go - and you know before hand so you won't have to lose money on the boat.

The interest isn't there I guess - because if there was - surely there would be no problem paying in advance like any other vacation, airline ticket, etc. I don't understand why this is any different.

Because people on forums are tightwad a-holes, pure and simple. I'd be fine with what you suggest, and I'd hazard a guess that about 6-7 people would be. That's too small of a group to me.

Besides, if you stake out a place on a public boat for the group, it's basically the same thing. I don't see much of a difference in the experience, honestly.

There are many charters that handle 1-6 people - the smaller boats.

wait...its not about being cheap or not. Its no one's business what they want / can spend. But if you sign up - and a boat is reserved for 10 when 3 don't want to show up for whatever reason under the sun - leaving the remaining 7 to foot their share is wrong.

My plan was to get all the "yes" on board - with payment up front to guarantee their position - which is no different than what anyone would do when reserving a vacation.

If you don't get enough people willing to say yes - with an up front deposit - then the interest is not there - and you know that in advance - and no time or money is wasted.

Brad - why don't you start a new thread, all nice and neat expressly for this purpose, then? The upfront part should scare away a decent amount of people, but maybe there are enough for a smaller boat. Of course, a smaller boat definitely means someone's (or some more than ones) going to submit to cookie tossage. Yes, I include myself in that one.

Sure - i'll give it a try. Like you, I won't go on a small boat and risk sea sickness - I don't care if my trip is for free.

Lets see what happens.
