Hi, Jimmy~
Great question! I just bought a 2011 GL550 this past week. The original factory warranty expires in October 2014. MBUSA (through a MB Dealer) sold me an extended three year warranty that takes me to October 2017 or 75k miles for $2575. Considering my GL just had $3100 in warranty work completed this week (steering/suspension work) - i consider it a VERY good investment! Contact me and I can give you a name of the person who helped me!
The dealer I bought the GL from TRIED VALIANTLY to sell me an aftermarket GM warranty that he claimed MB would accept. While that was true, I spend time researching and talking with the MB Service Director who stated that the GM warranty often disagrees with the "hours" for MB warranty work and that the difference is the customer responsibility. For instance, if a MB job says 2.3 hours to complete the GM warranty may say its a 1.8 hour job - leaving you on the hook for the .5 hour labor rate. Additionally, he stated that they have to get "pre authorization" from GM for anything - thus delaying work. Finally, he stated that they often send out their own adjustors/warranty experts to "determine" if there is a "need" for repair. I'm not a mechanic, but I'd trust a MB mechanic over any "wannabe" mechanic every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Good luck!
Cheers,

Out Of Control!!
When I was researching warranties, I found most used third party inspectors and required pre-authorization.
There seem to be a ton of companies selling warranties backed up/underewritten by a handful of warranty/insurance companies.
In trying to make heads or tails from recommendation, I found that even two companies selling products underwritten by the same company had differences in both coverage and cost.
I finally made what I hope is a good decision, but I have not used them so I am not making a recommendation one way or the other
I talked to a few mechanics and got conflicting replies on a few warranty companies and saw the same when checking BBB.
So my guess is there all the same, and if they don't give you want you want they suck, and if they do then they are great.

If you have the contract it should list both the selling company and somewhere the underwriting company.

So many warranty companies write policies that don't really cover anything that is likely to fail. I would be surprised if it covers the air suspension or electronic sensors like the one in the transmission.

Most did not cover the air springs, but the "luxury electrical" did cover the sensors and compressor.

I had a great aftermarket warranty but, unfortunately, they don't write policies on MB's anymore. I had a 4 year unlimited mileage warranty through Chrysler Service Contracts. Covered everything except appearance items.

Easy care has been great for our 07 gl450.
Think I paid ~3800 for initial 3year 36k beyond factory.
Just paid 4000 for 3/36 more.
Make sure you get the "total care"...the lesser policies don't cover air matic.
They do require preauthorization, but have been fast. They have sent an inspector out one time , but service was still approved.
I bought from dealer initially, but extended this time directly with them.
