Lightbulb Save The G !

There is a group of loyal Mercedes owners that have been trying to save the current 460/461/463 G class from the re-design we have all seen photos of. The new model might be great - it is no G. Name it something else and keep the current G alive, even if by special order. At the very least, design a G that is true to the heritage.

The grass roots effort needs your help. Please write the executives, contact your dealer, and talk to anyone you can.

Great Idea, I'll support it, but i'll tell you right now it's never going to work. Mainstream appeal has become more important to Mercedes throughout the years.

Just curious... I already own a G-class. What will it bring me if they continue production of the old model? Or what will I gain if the new model is not called a G-class? Because I am actually interested in the new model. It's not about how it looks, it's about how its capabilities fit my needs...

(How many 2002+ owners actually go off road with theirs?)

The yet-to-be-named replacement is a stretched ML. It won't have the capability of the current model. I'd like them to keep building them b/c someday I may want another! It is also a really neat vehicle that if properly marketed could carve out a nice niche. I'm sure it will sell, I just don't think it is worthy of the G heritage.

How many of any SUV owners go offroad? Very few. I'd suspect those that own Gs are more likely to. Mine goes offroad and the roads in Chicago might as well be trail rated.

OK, well that's not really a reason for me or most people. But I wish you luck.

I really like the current G-Class, but there is no way that Mercedes can really keep selling this version for much longer. They are a business after all and the costs of manufacturing and supporting something which is now so different than the rest of their product line doesn't really make sense.

On the other hand, I think that what we've seen of the new large SUV they are developing certainly can't be considered a replacement for the current G-Class. It certainly makes sense to develop a vehicle like that, for those people who need something that has three rows of seating...but a G-Class successor it certainly isn't.

I hope Mercedes either shelves the G-Class name or designs a worth successor at some point.

I'm definitely backing you on this one; I'm only 17 now, but I'm planning on getting a G sometime within the next 3 or 4 months (to go with my SLK55.. which won't be here for another 8). The G's exterior styling and everything is legendary, to me at least, and the fact that it has an interior as beautiful and luxurious as it is stuffed inside that monster of an armored KGB truck is what sold me. The new G is just a very slightly more aggressive looking super-soccer-mom M-Class. And the M-Class is the only Benz I don't like.

The present G is being replaced due to it not being able to withstand future environmental-laws in the EU, not due to age (if that was the case it would've been scrapped a long time ago).

The "new G" will never be the same, as it starts of at a completely different point - the present one was designed as a military vehicle and then transformed into something it really isnt; A luxury car. By all means, I spent quite some time in a 2002 G500 (btw; Where are the pics you promised Scorchie!?) recently, and before we took it offroad I wasn't a fan at all. No matter how many gadgets and fine leather you stuff in it, it's pedigree shines through.

The EU isn't the problem. The problem is it doesn't bring the company any profits. Benz has tried to use parts from other cars to bring costs down but the G-class is still hand built thus high cost. Plus, it's not a high seller.
