G-Wagen variations
Some of you may not know that the Geländewagen was produced by Peugeot in France for quite some time in the 1980s, and it was called the Peugeot P4. They were built at the former Panhard et Levassor car factory in Paris. Panhard (last car: 1967), now owned by PSA Peugeot, is still a major supplier of armoured field cars and light vehicles for various armies.
The Peugeot P4 body layout was identical to the German military version: SWB, canvas roof, roll hoop. It had different headlamp nacelles than the G-Wagen; with rectangular lights (very cool, get some for your G 500), a different grille with a huge Peugeot lion and turn signals below the headlights instead of on top of the fenders (get that for your G 500 too). The P4 was powered by a Peugeot-Indénor 2.5 L 4 cylinder Diesel engine. Watch the news from the Ivory Coast and you'll see some from time to time.
The French Army is selling the first batches off (they're 17 years old now) for between 5000 and 8000 Euros, the former needing some work and the latter in mint condition. The P4 would be a good candidate for serious off-road use.
Civilian versions were also available for a couple of years - they were a fair whack cheaper than the M-B version to boot. But then they were more basic too. A better off-road prospect though (you would not mind denting it )
Buy one and take it to the M-B dealer. It would be a mind-bender for them. And take it to the local M-B Club get together, just for laughs. Tell them how cheap it was
