They were/are an option, but not standard equipment. Neither one of my G's (1984 280GE and 2000 G500) had/has the rear fog light, nor did my 1973 280SE4.5.

All 2002 MB models sold in Europe have a rear fog light, though most have this integrated into the left rear light cluster. The G-wagen is the only one that has a distinct rear fog light.
I don't know what the story is with US models as this G500 is the first MB model that eithe or my family have owned in the US.

My 1984 280GE was purchased in Europe for use in Europe. The rear fog light was an optional extra cost accessory.
I guess we all (including myself) need to be careful about sweeping generalizations (like this one).

I should have been more clear that I meant all new MB models, the 2003 models in dealerships now. The way to turn on the rear fog light is to pull the headlight control knob out to the second click.
For some reason, lots of people back home in Dubai felt it necessary to always have their rear fog light on. That really drives me nuts because they are very bright and make you think that their brake lights are on.
I've only had to use mine twice in the year I've owned my G500. My 91 300GE had it as well.
