Weird starting problem...?

Hey guys,

Well, I have an issue and I'm not really sure what it could be coming from but I'll try to explain as much as I can in order to have you guys help me hopefully.

I have a G500 and around a week ago, turned my car to the 2nd position meaning waiting for the fuel pump to make that sound and for it to fade and by mistake while starting the car I pressed on the gas pedal a bit and the car started then just went to a really low rpm shaking itself really hard like a carburetor on a cold day and then just stalled. Got scared and then decided to do it again, then it started just fine, thought it was a one time weird thing and decided to ignore it. Second day I come and it's the same problem whenever it's a cold start or whenever the car has been turned off for at least 30 minutes. Not sure what the problem is, it's not the fuel pump because if it was then it wouldn't drive the second time I start it but it's always the first start, just starts then goes to a low rpm then starts shaking as if there's no fuel going into the engine and then stalls, do the ignition thing again and starts just fine and drives just perfect.

Any idea?

Our old 230ge does this. We only use it in the worst UK weather and so it hasn’t been out this year. It still does it , but after a couple of tries it keeps running. When we get time to get it out we will look into it further; until then I’ll follow this thread with interest.

I have to bump this thread as this has happened to me twice on my ‘07 G55. Has anyone had this issue addressed?

This happened to me the past 2 days (first start also). Yesterday it was just a 'weak start', but today it almost stumbled and died. I turned off the car and restarted without an issue. I thought I had just stopped the starter (let off the 3rd key position) too quickly, but that doesn't seem that likely. It was strange enough to be noticeable.

My first thought would be a sticking throttle body or one of the vacuum lines used for cold start sequence was plugged up/disconnected. I'll keep monitoring over the next few days to see if it keeps being an issue/if there is something wrong. No error codes or anything from a generic OBDII scan.

I have an 02 G500 with 88k miles

I had a similar issue but never updated it here. I had replaced my water pump before having this issue so I assumed it was related or an odd coincidence. I ended up replacing the cam position sensor on the back of the engine with no luck... then I found that one of the electrical plugs on the front of the engine had been bumped or slightly disconnected somehow. It must have been creating enough of a circuit here and there to start normally but then not enough at times to start. Plugged it in all the way and starts completely fine. If you’re looking at the engine and the coolant temp sensor it’s to the left of that. I can take a pic tomorrow.

Hopefully you guys are dealing with something “easy” like this...

Exact same issue here.

Other threads for other cars point to MAF, Fuel Pump, or a cold start valve (I am not sure if our trucks even have those).

Ugh. Happened again today when the wife had a covid test to go to. No CEL or errors on dash.

Ok, let's start throwing some $$$ at the problem and cross our fingers! 🤷‍♂️

Step 1, Crankshaft Position Sensor

CPS is the most common cause of these kinds of things on the M113. It sits in a very tough location on the engine and takes a beating over time. The only time my G left me stranded was because of the CPS. Now I have a spare on hand.

On my G it was a connection in the front side of the engine on the passenger side. The connector had come unplugged ever so slightly. Shop found it, plugged it in and problem solved.

Mine self-resolved. It did last for multiple tanks of fuel, only in the colder months, but finally just went away. I apologize for that not being a great answer for you.

we have a 2014 G550: same issue as stated above. We live in Florida so no real cold days and this literally just happen out of the blue. I have reset the gas cap (vacuum system can be effected by loose cap) and I have filled the tank ( we had half a tank) with shell premium gas. Coincidentally- we did have our coolant system worked on recently- I will check connections. I wonder if it’s just not bad fuel? We routinely use premium but as we all know different manufacturers have different standards about what premium is.
no engine malfunction annunciations
