Brand new G63 downshift shudder

Just got a new 18 G63 (had 22 miles when it arrived and has 123 today) and when coming to a stop with a little speed, the automatic downshifting seems to shutter/stutter around the 4-3 and 3-2 shifts. If I'm coming in slower, smooth as silk. It's almost like the tranny can't keep up with the computer's request to downshift and stumbles. I'll admit I haven't driven the car in C mode (S mode only for me) to see what happens, but it's annoying and never happened on the previous Gs I've had. Anyone experience a similar problem, did you fix it and what was the solution? Thanks

During break-in, use C mode so the adaptations can learn in. With so few miles on the vehicle, nothing has been taught in yet, once it's adapted it will smooth out. Drive easily for the first little bit to get it all adjusted properly.

Thanks. To be clear, I'm not driving it hard at all - I always try to adhere to the break in instructions on my cars. I do, however, tend to brake fairly late. I guess I'll keep it in C mode for a few hundred more miles and see if it clears up - I didn't read not to drive in S, just that you should avoid kickdowns and going over 85..

Do a search, and you will see I posted about this EXACT issue. At first my dealer told me my 2018 G63 was performing as it should. But, we have TWO 2018 G63s, and only one (mine) was doing this. When I took delivery, I believe I had like 15 or 18 miles on the odometer. I bought my car brand new from Beverly Hills Mercedes-Benz in June.

I finally made the AMG Shop Foreman take a ride with me, and he said my car did this shudder/rough downshift more than he has ever felt on a modern G-Class.

They kept it for over a day and did a very intense software update and "re-mapped" the transmission and even replaced a part. It is MUCH better now, but still not as smooth downshifting as our other '18 G-Class. But, it is improved...and since everything else about the G is kind of rough, I can live with this. But before the repair....sometimes I thought the dashboard or instruments would be shuddered loose!!

Btw, putting the transmission on C, S or M did not make a difference for me. My car had about 1500 miles when the repair was done. I am now at about 2200 miles. LOVE my G63!!!!!!!!

Thanks Deutsch100. It ain't even close to as bad as your G sounds - just a little shudder (I just realized I used the wrong word), nothing to where I think anything will shake loose. However, I will contact your AMG guy and see what he did to at least make it a little smoother for you and pass it on to my dealer. I've experienced similar tranny shudder in other cars, even in my S63C, but not in previous Gs. One thing is for sure, manually shifting for a proper downshift - at higher revs, not worrying about consumption like in auto mode - the tranny drops a gear perfectly and without a shudder.

Hey there. I bought at Beverly Hills, but we Service at Mercedes-Benz of Encino. Shop Foreman is Jeremy and he has been working on G-Classes for about 20 years. When I had my 2016 G550 I had the weirdest noise when stopping, and Jeremey found it within 60 seconds doing a test drive!

My transmission fix was Software, re-mapping the 7G tranny and something he mentioned about a torque converter?!

The shudder I had/have was not always super rough....sometimes it was very faint (like you are describing), but it did get worse over driving for about 1000 miles. Really glad I persisted and got it addressed!

I think my 2018 G500 does the same when slowing down in very certain circumstances. It's like a harsher than normal downshift (like someone downshifting a stick shift who isn't very good at it) happens maybe once a month so I'll leave it be and ask if there are any software updates at its first service visit.
