Need New Transfer Case W463 2002 G500

Hey Friends,

Oddly, My transfer Case went out on me last week. The truck only has 53k miles. was casually driving around after dinner when I came to a stop at a light. As the light turned green, i accelerated and got about 5ft before I heard a loud yet, muffled BOOM from just under the shift knob. While still in drive, the car just barely rolled along and felt like it was in Neutral. The engine was still working fine but there was no power. When I tried to put the car in Park, it would grind the gears, so I left it in Neutral and got it towed to my mechanic, where he concluded that it was a failed transfer case.

A couple of questions for you all:

1. Do you all think the 22in Brabus Wheels I have on the truck may have attributed to the Transfer Case's failure?
2. how worried should I be with replacing the failed transfer case with a used one that has 160k miles on it?
3. any recommendations where I might find one other than ebay?
4. What, in your experiences, attributes to failed transfer cases on the G-Class? I truly believed these trucks were tanks and would not in a million years would have suspected the transfer case to go bad at the 55k mile marker!

Respectfully,

ARI
