Due to the upright windshield, are the G wagon more prone to cracked windshield from flying rocks ?
Also, on the 2016 G63, I noticed on the very bottom right corner(passenger side) of the windshield having a sensor attached... what is that sensor for ?
Not meaning to hijack the original posting, but since it is a relating subject... Thanks

windshield cracks
I also have a couple jeep wranglers they also have a very straight windshield but I have never had one of the windshields crack on one of the jeeps. They are however significantly smaller than the one in the G Class

As someone noted, I think the new one may be worse, given the new install technique. On the other hand, the new G has 50% more torsional rigidity.

The Jeep Wrangler has always had this same issue of cracked windshields being very common. A flat, straight-up, and tall piece of glass facing the road. When I had my Wrangler, I got to the point where I would just "live and let live" with cracked windshields.

Brutal, and very annoying. We've had our 2015 G550 for 4 years now and no windshield issues, hope its not an issue with the 2019 model. Shouldn't be as much, since the windshield on the 2019s is raked back a bit more than previous gens.

I had mine replaced by Park Place in Grapevine, TX and they did a very good job. It took several weeks to get the glass and a couple days to install. The install took longer, since it was cold and they wanted the glue to set correctly. Please note that they must order a new foam strip, that goes on the back of the glass, between the dash and the glass. It does not come with the glass. The camera and rain sensor mount into a plate that is pre-installed on the new glass. This makes it easier to install and calibrate the camera. Also the new glass has alignment pegs. Have them take pics of the glass and the frame or have them show you, when it's out. I noticed that my glass broke very close to where the adhesive overlapped. There was about 3" where the adhesive was about twice as thick. I wonder if this caused extra outward stress on the glass, at that point...

have you called around and gotten any new quotes? My windshield to my 2019 G550 has cracked and the Mercedes-Benz dealership sent me to someone who quoted me at $3500 too. Wasn’t sure if that’s the going rate or if I just sounded like I could be ripped off. I’ve called 10 other places that just refused to or said it’s back ordered. Thanks.

For G-Buyer's - if your insurance does not cover cost of OE replacement glass - Mercedes Financial offers a add-on Glass package that covers unlimited chip repair and up to 3-replacement MB OE windshields

would this option have to have been checked at purchase. I'm waiting to see what the insurance says about the quote.

There seems to be a spot (black area in the crack) in your photo where rock might've hit and crack developed? Is that correct?
The windshield cracks and the hissing sound is making me very uncomfortable about the G63..hope MB is listening and working a fix!!

It is possible, but if it was, it was a very small rock/pebble, because I did not even hear it, and it made that large of a crack all from one small pebble... The crack is 12"+.

Your new windshield seal looks not so great. Someone previously posted on this board you should be proactive and make sure your MB dealer specifically orders the MB OEM part foam strip sealer kit. Do you know if your dealer ordered the MB foam sealer strip?
Best of luck to you, sir.

I had the windshield on my Panamera replaced twice and each time I requested to be there to make sure the glass is properly aligned with even gaps all around because once the glue is set, no adjustments can be done. Sloppy installers are more common than you think.
