‘19 G63 engine issues...
So far I know 2 of such high profile cases where brand new g63 has engine issues ...first being famous YouTuber, solomandrin’s wifevand second being a person in the Cali Bay Area..both happen to be in California-
I’m wondering how many more have encountered engine issues on the new G? I’m getting very worried about the reliability and really hope that MB is addressing the fix and applying to all new ones being built ...

‘19 G550 here - 5800kms, vehicle has consumed 8.5 litres of oil. I’m fearing scored cylinders or at the very least a duff turbo. Everything is else is solid, dealer will be advised by Germany on next steps shortly.

A 2-19 G500 in China has engine issue. The local dealer ordered a new engine to replace the broken one. But the owner didn’t accept it.
Here is the image of the spark plug of that broken 2019 G500, only 5500km

right - if one is good with driving the loaner cars instead of vehicle you bought with many times the price of the loaner car plus all the headache.. trust me I know - owned 2x custom ordered range rovers before
i really hope that these issues are outliers and not the trend..

So... "2" from NorCal (supposedly lets be frank one is a YouTube poser) + "1" Euro + "1" from China that has been thrashed ..... I'd say this is definitely NOT a epidemic..

The engine check light on that one photo above was the result of a piston scraping the engine bloc.
Full quote from the G63 owner: "Might have to wait 2-6 months for my car ☹️ the number 2 piston scrape the engine bloc. Its a factory defect."

may be it’s driving behaviors impact on brand new engines before breaking in or small percentage of defective engines on very early models. If you recall these sat at the port for a very long time before these were given a go from US govt. it’d be interesting to know the month of the manufacturing for these

The 4.0 L biturbo 8 cylinder engine and transmission combo in the G63 are not unique and have been used in the E-Class and S-Class since 2017 so I would not expect the G63 to have any more engine defects than the average AMG with that engine.

2019 g63 engine issues
my 2019 G 63 has only 1600 miles on it. Check engine light came on yesterday and car was shaking. Was better after a restart of the engine but the light came on the next day. Service is confused about the cause. But they say that there is something wrong with the engine. This is an edition one g63. Will really suck if it is a major issue.

I’d like to know if you’ve done 1k miles service or not? Also, so far seems to be on earlier g wagons with relatively low miles ..

I did follow proper break-in procedure. The car has been pampered in every way. My dealer had recommended the first service at approximately 1500 miles. It was actually going in for that service when the check engine light came on.

No more MB:(
This is interesting, the engine is not new to MB so it's established. The question is, is this new to the G or do other 4.0L MB cars have the same experience but we just don't hear about it? There are lots of S and SL class cars out there with this engine. Or, is it related to the tech and software? Shouldn't be happening.

Just because this engine is used on the other models doesn't mean the ones installed on the G63 won't have issues. This might be a batch-specific issue or maybe Mercedes used new parts (eg. same specification but different materials) on the G63 motors. These kinds of changes happens all the time.
And no, following break-in procedure has nothing to do with anything. These are German cars with German autobahns. You think anybody is going to follow the break-in procedure when they get onto the autobahn? All engines are broken in from the factory when they dyno the engine when they bench test it and the engine is the only component that doesn't need breaking in. It's your brakes and tires that needs break-in.

First 1k oil change? I don't think I have done that on any of my Porsches since my 993 cars.
Modern engines are not like the old engines of the past and synthetic oils nowadays are a lot better than before.
You can always follow the old-school guideline of doing an oil change in the first 1k miles, but it's not necessary anymore. Porsche hasn't had that mandate in any of their cars in a long time and I have all of them, including the 918 Spyder and the Carrera GT

I don’t think I’m in full agreement with the statement... yes, the engines are bench tested along with dyno with similar loads but it’s to meet minimum requirements. There’re strict guidelines for break-in period - all parts are new with so many mechanical parts interconnected and associated tolerance stack up, it takes time for parts to adjust. After first 1K the oil must be drained and replaced. There are numerous studies in Porsche and BMW forums (havent checked MB) related to oil content analysis after break-in period and it’s typically full of contaminants and metal content
