G-class rust
#77
just stumbled across a nice 2014 G63 w/ 41k on the clock that I really liked the spec. First 20k miles in FL (no salt), second 20k miles in NY (1/2017 - now). Zoomed into the pics and bubbling already around rear/trunk top hinge. Rust bubbling and about to flake off paint in 20k miles and less that 2 years (2 winters) of a salt region. Ridiculous

What's the garage history of the truck?
I agree that anything built in the modern era regardless of price should not have these fails. Certainly concerning and I will be paying attention to my 2018. It's garage kept and we don't drive it too much so maybe that helps but still concerning. Sounds inevitable. I'd like to hear from more owners that own modern G's.

I bet the new gen cars will not have rust issues.

if there is any way you could get pictures of it, it would be much appreciated.

That pic above is incorrect. I'm referring to the hinge on the trunk door (spare tire/rear window door where it rusts around the rubber grommet) not the passengers door hinges.
However, I have noticed on every G63 I have looked at.....if you look in the seam (like the pic of the white one above) I've seen rust inside the door sill where the hinge connects to the body. All passenger doors have that 3 piece hinge on every G63 I've looked at from 2014 to 2018

In Canada (and I think the US is the same), the MB Warranty for surface corrosion is 4 years or 80,000km. So at least some of these G63s you are looking at would be covered.
And BTW, the European rust warranty is NOT 30 years - it’s only 30 years for perforation, which will never happen on a modern car. And you have to have your car serviced by MB at least every 2 years, and there a bunch of other requirements. So it’s nice, but not as great as it seems.

Wow. Good to see I'm not alone. I have a 2011 G550 with just over 50,000 miles. I have rust on the door sills, around the rear door and around the front windshield (the windshield rust isn't quite as bad as yours, but the rear door rust is worse!). I can't believe Mercedes sold cars with such bad rust protection. Not sure what I should do about it. Will it cost a lot to have a body shop sand it down and repaint it? I might just cut my losses, sell the G, and buy a Range Rover. All aluminum FTW. OP you might want to do the same.
Range Rover is much much worse in terms of reliability.
Also, aluminum will still corrode if not treated properly. Just check the McLaren forum if you don’t believe me and look at the rust issues on brand new 570s!

Is 2 for 2 or 100% not common enough for you? Those were 2 separate white G63s and same rust inside the hinge seams. Same places, same rust. Also the grey one on the back door hinge has the same as the red one on the hinge...I'd encourage all those living in the rust belt to go look at theirs. The metal and sealing and paint is terrible on these vehicles (pre-2019.....to early to tell for post 2019). Can't deny the evidence. And these are newer low mileage cars too!

aluminum corrosion is aluminum oxide, a very hard material that actually protects the aluminum from further corrosion. Steel on the other hand will rust, but unlike aluminum oxide, will expand and flake off which exposes new metal to further rusting which will continue to flake off weakening the metal until it falls apart.

Read the entire thread and look at the pictures.
A guy who owns a Mercedes collision center even commented that this is a very common problem, and it is due to cheap materials/build quality.

Sorry bro but one guy in one bodyshop is not exactly evidence of a widespread problem. I agree that it should not happen at all; but we don't know how these previous owners treated the cars. For instance, most after-market rustproofing is actually worse for metal than not using any. Or perhaps these are repainted panels that were not adequately prepped prior to wash.
