WTB a used G63 - Stuff to look out for?

Hi there! I want to buy a used G63 for my wife as our family SUV as we are expecting our first child soon.

I am looking somewhere in the $60K - $100K range. I don't know a whole bunch about the differences in every model year, but it looks like the interior got a decent modernization around MY 2013, is that correct? Mileage isn't such a huge issue to us but wondering if there's a mileage amount that really brings any concern? Are there certain model years to avoid? I'd love to get a certified pre-owned one, assuming that lowers our liability of fixing stuff that goes wrong out of pocket. Do all CPOs cover the same stuff? Are there certain known issues to look out for? We definitely want to have CarPlay (either as a factory option or 3rd party - is there a certain MY minimum we must have in order to have CarPlay compatibility?). If we had the budget I'd go for the new model/design, but we're don't so I think our price range will limit us to MY 2013-2016/2017?

Any advice, known issues, recommendations, etc. would be MOST appreciated! Thank you so much.

-Keith

17 has Apple Car Play as well I am pretty sure.
I bought an 18 just 3 weeks ago, I LOVE IT! There are some minor changes on the 18 over the 17 but nothing major.
100K is close but not likely but buy an 18 G63 unless it has HIGH mileage (over 40K)

Questions

1). Why do you want a 63 over the 550?
2). Not sure where you are located but you will want to account for winter tires if you get any snow and have the 63.
3). Have you been in one? There is not much room in the back and I do not think it would be easy to quickly get a carrier in and out. I have a 6 year old and it was a pain to step up on the step, lean in and buckle him till he got the hang of doing it himself. I had a Jeep JK Wrangler Rubicon when he was first born and it was pain getting the carrier in and out.

Think it over, I LOVE my G but I do not think it would be my first choice for SUV with a tiny one

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but other than the rear side window weather stripping that was removed on MY18, what are other changes over MY17?

I have never driven a '17, but was told the suspension was tuned different

OP...mine has 14K miles. I will ask above your range when selling it (it's worth more on a trade). If interested I can send you specs

Thank you everyone for the information... please keep it coming!

I don't mind going aftermarket to get CarPlay - just didn't know if certain MY were incompatible with getting an aftermarket screen installed?

Something like: https://www.macrumors.com/2019/08/09...play-receiver/

or this: https://www.sony.com/electronics/in-...ers/xav-ax7000

I picked up a '14 G550 for the wife right before we had our new baby and we are 4 months in and LOVE it. WatchTimes is right, getting his car seat in and out is a pain (especially for the wife who is 5'3") but having a seat with a quick-detach base that stays in the car makes it a lot easier. You can use the LATCH attachments with the base in the middle seat which is (1) great because of how secure they are and (2) allows the two front seats to lean back far enough to be comfortable.

Pros:
- Very maneuverable around town (we're in LA), easy to park and has great visibility BUT if you're not in a dense area these aren't as important.
- Trunk. We can fit our Uppababy stroller in the back without folding it, which makes short outings really easy. The trunk also serves as a great changing spot, the thin bumper and the license plate cutout mean you can get close to baby without actually touching the bumper if its wet/dirty.

Highly recommend you get a decent length test drive (try to get some highway if possible). The "character" that makes many people love them is definitely not for everyone.

All that said, for your search I would highly recommend MY13+ - the facelifted interior is great and its nice to have a backup camera and distance sensors. Rust can be an issue so look for cars from the southwest if you can. Do you need CarPlay or are you just looking for bluetooth? MY13+ has bluetooth that works fine for music/calls with our iPhones. I'll echo too, why 63 vs 550?

Regarding why G63 vs 550 - I like the looks of the 63 better, usually has a nicer interior, likely has better resale as more people seek out 63 vs 550 if we wanted to sell it. Any issues with going that route vs 550? Is one more reliable than the other?

Anyone have any luck with installing an aftermarket head unit and what MY onwards supports that (for Apple CarPlay)?
