Buying 2020 G Wagon - Newbie Questions!

Hi guys. first time posting. Looking to order new ‘20 G550 asap and i am coming from a range rover owner... so sorry for some rookie questions...

1- i grappled with a G63 but if its just about speed, i have a McLaren 720 and a Porsche so speed isnt my number one priority with this decision... what are some other advantages between the two models? For those that have a G550, do you regret not getting the G63?

2- The “Build Feature” has not been available on the MBUSA site... does anyone have an option list for the 2020 model range? anyone also know when the Build feature will be up and running?

3- any must have features you want to highlight and any features/options that you could do without or are a waste?

thanks everyone for your guidance!

The "interior" part is broken, but you can otherwise configure everything here:

G550 in US can’t have the surround view camera as an option. It’s also better at off-roading, although the G63 will bridge most of the difference if you stick with 20” wheels.

The base prices between the two models is relatively small, especially since the G63 includes a lot of options as standard too. However, dealers try to markup a lot more on the G63 so that may make the final cost difference massive.

Personally, I think the G63 is well worth it assuming you aren’t getting screwed by markups. I have a few super cars as well and still found the G63’s acceleration a ton of fun. It’s one thing to do a blazing fast sprint in a planted 720S. It’s another thing doing a 4.5 0-60mph in a tall truck that heaves and squats like a sumo wrestler due to the inertia!

G550
I'm right there with you OP. I've got GT Porsches in the garage for going fast. I went with the 550....its enough of a price difference.....I plan on daily it into work which is 37 miles each way in ATL traffic...so the MPG different will make a difference. And it will go offroading.....so I'll feel slightly less bad about offroading a 140k car vs the 160k+ the 63 would have cost me.

One is an AMG. Totally worth the extra cost.

I love the 550 it sounds great and it goes as fast as i wand to in a brick. I also have a rocket that does 0-60 in 2.5. don't need to stop more frequently at gas station. I looked the other day G's up to 11.8 MPG it's cold in Pgh.

all this is very helpful guys... still grappling on the 63 or 550... the 550 felt fast but i dont want to have regrets as i am buying car (not leasing) ... i.e. i dont want the “love the 550 but wish i had the AMG” feeling?!! I like the fact that the full suite of AMG packages can optically make the truck look like the 63 but.... seems that the major delta between the two is really the engine. i have about 2 weeks before i order...

Side question, for those ordering, seems that from order to delivery is about 8-9 months... seems fair?

great forum btw!

When you get it depends on your allocation. For example, I just put down my deposit on an existing allocation that a dealer was able to change to my specs/build, which is to be built in April, with a June delivery or so.

2020 g 550
I went with the 550 because it was about a year or more to get the amg 63 only 6 months for the 550, it took about 7 months from deposit to delivery.
After driving the 550 for about a week now I love it. The 550 checks all the boxes for me fast enough great in the snow and my kids love it. That all being said I bet the
amg is just that much better at everything then the 550, but in reality you can't go wrong with either one at msrp. Good luck with your choice.

2020 g63
I went back and forth deciding which to get for a while before I decided to buy my 63. To the average person they probably look identical, but I think the g63 looks considerably more aggressive if you leave the brush guard on than the 550. I also wanted to spec my fairly highly with the exclusive designo interior and various trims. It didn't make sense to me that the same options on the 550 are considerably more than on the 63. In the end the 550 would've been very close to the base price of a 63 if not more, so it made more sense to me to pay the difference for the 63 and get the more aggressive looks and performance. It would've been nice to save some money on it, but 140k-150k for the 550 is way to much to have any doubts and not completely love it.

2018 G63
I went from an 18 G63 to a 20 and am very happy. Both are a blast to drive although the 18 was more driver involved.

You can never have too much HP, but aside from the engine, I prefer everything about the 550 vs. 63. I guess I’m a ‘horses for courses’ purist, and to me the G is a hot rod off-roader. I really like the slight increase in ground clearance, softer ride, discrete off-road friendly exhaust system, higher profile tires, heated steering wheel (a big issue!) etc.

In this day and age a hand assembled engine is meaningless, and while I’m sure the AMG engine uses a few special parts, most of the difference relates to levels of boost. , I strongly suspect you can achieve similar horsepower numbers in the 550 with a chip/ECU upgrade if you’d like another second off the 0-60 times!

PS: and when I heard about the added delivery wait time, the issue was really closed.

hey guys, ordering this car saturday... oddly, the dealer said they don't know a deposit from me to order.... my family has been buying cars for years from him.

is it odd he isn’t asking me for a deposit to order G550?

More importantly what are the terms for a refund? Many dealers are asking for deposits and even the dealer where I bought from in the past asked me for one.

If you are serious about buying it should not be an issue; however, we all know something unexpected could come up. In that case, if you could not buy it when it arrived, I would expect a refund of the deposit when it was sold to someone else, for an amount equal to or greater than what you would have paid.

Dealers may not need deposits on the G because if a buyer flakes out they know they can sell it any way. Most dealers take a deposit because it's a no interest loan.

I'm not near ready to order but on a whim I called the two closest dealers on the wait time for G550 in case it was really a long time. One quoted over a year and a $5,000 deposit, the other said I could have it by April with a $2,000 deposit.

LOL only way you'd get a April one is because they've already had it on order with no buyer or the buyer backed out.

Different at every dealer. I didn't put a deposit on a g63. I didnt ask to put one down and he didnt ask me to put one down. (Few months in I did nervous I did not). But the dealer was a stand up guy (no games) and got my G63 faster than expected.
