G550 4x4 Squared ..... on beach

Question for the group ..... do I actually need to do anything (such as lowering tire pressure) before driving my 4x4 on a beach? I took my old 16 G550 on the beach a few years back without lowering tire pressure and got stranded on a dune so I’m a little gun shy, but also have to imagine that if a stock 4x4 can’t drive on a beach as-is, it’s a sign that I should stop trying!

In sand you should reduce the tire pressure to 15-20 PSI.
I am new to my G63 so not much experience with what diff settings are to recommend. But turn the diff's off before you get stuck. Momentum while driving is the key and never stop/break in an uphill

Yes, lower to 20psi. Curious, when you got stranded with the 2016 did you try the lockers?

So I’m going to come right out and say that I have 3 Gs now, but honestly have no clue how or why/when to use the diff locks. Can someone point me to a dummies guide to how and why to use? I really want to play with these guys, but honestly that beach experience just convinced me not to bother.

as for letting tire pressure out, is that necessary even for the much larger and wider tires on the squared?

It depends on the beach. Down here one can drive on Daytona Beach in a car since it is so hard packed but in Crescent Beach, just north of me, the sand varies based on how much rain we get, the tides, time of year, etc. And at times they post signs at the ramps stating "4x4s only" but it is really based up the person - tow trucks are seen often for cars and even 4x4s at times. Personally, I have driven on the sand a lot and unless it is deep there is no need to do anything but when it gets deep momentum is a good idea!

I went off roading for the first time a couple weeks ago, started a thread asking the same question on the diffs, link below with helpful feedback from experienced off roaders. I used the center and rear a couple times, not sure I needed to but I saw a couple of heavier duty jeeps start wheel spinning on some rock climbs and didn't want to take a chance so I locked them up and powered right through no problem. You will need to engage low first and must follow the order to lock, center, rear and front. Holding the center locks (number 1) will deactivate all at once.

As for the psi, yes. It makes a huge difference and enhances traction, particularly on sand. You will want to do this.

Tire selection is a large part of the equation, both width of tire and tread pattern. The 4x4 has wide tires and more aggressive tread than a standard G’s OEM tires. So that already has you in better position than before. Tire pressure varies with how hard packed the sand is. The more loose, the lower the pressure.

It is TRACTION CONTROL that you want to turn OFF; diffs are helpful in the sand. You want the wheels free spinning and not being bogged down by electronics.

To do this is the G, just place in Low range drive and select the center differential (labeled “1” of the 3 diffs). This will disengage traction control and AWD and place the G in 4 wheel drive. You want 4 wheel drive in the sand.

The 2020 G has “desert mode”, even the G550. I imagine it just does what I stated above and maybe let the engine rev a higher and/or allows 4 wheel drive/center locked diff in high range drive. Not sure.

First few pages are a good read for Diff Lock users.

Installing a lift on my G55 this weekend, hoping to find somewhere to stretch it out once I'm done Sunday.
