This is my first Mercedes since 2014 and I’m really impressed with the improvements. Funny, just logged on for first time in many years and had to erase my signature. Last updated in 2009..
Since then I’ve had everything from several Porsche TTS to McLaren 650s and 675 LT and many other fun cars as well as many SUV’s.
I only say this to point out that I’m really in love with this G550!!
Night Package "Plus" - nice but I passed on it for my build since the FL sun is hot enough on the roof!
After you have some time behind the wheel I would be curious to know if there is something you like better about the older one.
It’s interesting because everything I remember being awesome about the 14 G63 still remains in the vehicle.
Still feels like you’re wielding a solid piece of steel as you drive around town but the comfort and tech are night and day different.
I could never get comfortable in the drivers seat of my 14 and the pedal position was less than stellar.
The AMG upgraded exhaust is worth every penny on the 20, the engine feels like it makes more than advertised and has plenty of grunt. I may still do a Renntech module for the truck though.
So after a few more days in this truck, I am LOVING IT even more.
I have owned everything from the BMW X7 M50i which I still have, to a new gen Cadillac Escalade, Range Rovers, Jeeps, Lexus LX570 and on and on and this is by far the best of the bunch. Not to try and compare the G to a Jeep but comparing it to my X7, I would drive the G every day. So much better in the tech and instrumentation and the sound of the exhaust is phenomenal. I could write a book about how disappointed I’ve been with the BMW tech. The G’s steering wheel controls are the best I’ve ever experienced and light years ahead of the competition. The seats are very comfortable and the message features are amazing. The engine has more power than what i was expecting and acceleration feels almost as strong as my last Gen G63.
I’m a huge fan now and that is from someone that has had over 50 vehicles in the past 25 years.

Upgraded from a 2010 G55 and the 2 things I miss the most are the more narrow profile and the sheer rawness of the pre-19s. The W463As are better in every way but as many people pine for legacy/vintage cars the original Gs have a rawness that is still very appealing. If not for the rampant rust issues I would have kept the G55 for nostalgia and a good throwback. Will almost certainly own a pre-19 at some point down the line.

Well said. My thoughts exactly. When the MY 19's came out someone on this forum said they kept their old one after buying the upgraded MY '19. I asked myself why? But now I understand. It reminds me of the change Porsche made when they introduced the water cooled models. I did in fact keep my air cooled car for a few years even though I went through a number of water cooled 911's. There was just something about the older car I just couldn't give up on. Even though the newer models were improved in many ways. But something changed with regard to the G when I took delivery of my '20 G 550. I found that I was using the G more than my other cars by far. To the point where I have turned in my MY '18 E 400 cab and no longer pine to replace my S 550 for longer trips. The revamped G now meets most of my needs in one vehicle. I do keep my C43 coupe for fun runs and a nostalgic MY '02 C 230 coupe Kompressor with only 22 K miles just for fun. But the new G is really the vehicle of choice for a daily driver and extended trips.
