Ceramic Coating

I decided to get the ceramic coating done to my 2017 G550. The process took the guy a full two days. He did it right in my garage, plus I had to leave it in the garage for another 24 hours after he finished. So I’ve been ubering to work for the last 3 days, but I think it was worth it. I will reserve judgement for a couple of years to see if it holds up as long as it is supposed to, but for now, it looks great!

I know some other people on here have done this. How has it held up over time?

Looks great. Love those wheels. Such a classic look.

I'm one year into my ceramic coat and its holding up great. The installer game me some ceramic maintenance spray and told me that if I sprayed it on and buffed it out on some regular basis that it would help to keep the ceramic coating better in tact. I probably do that about once every 5 weeks or so. Not sure if its helping or not but the results / effect are really amazing. Thought for sure it was snake oil but I'm a firm believer at this point and wouldn't get another car without it.

Mind sharing what you believe the effects and results are? Most of the results I’ve seen really come from the prep work (i.e paint correction) that happens before the “ceramic” coating. I personally could never see the value in it and many coatings seem to last far less than advertised. Would love to hear some feedback on how folks quantify the bang they’re getting for their buck with this product.

What kind of coating did he use? I had my Porsche done with OptiCoat Pro, which I am also getting on the G550 after the PPF is applied. It has made keeping my Porsche clean much easier since I only have to use the Opti-rinse to clean it. It basically takes the place of waxing but with better results, and it does not need to be redone for several years if properly applied and cared for.

He used Gtechnique brand, but I forget the specific name right now. I am currently at my beach house, which is surrounded by acres and acres of dunes, so I am used to having a complete dusting on my car every day, even after a good detailing, but that is not happening now. Incredible! So in my circumstances, if this holds up for even a year, I think it is well worth the $1500 I paid.

I live right on the beach as well so I know what you mean, and I make sure all my vehicles are coated because of it. On the east coast of FL and the west winds are keeping the sea breeze almost still so the vehicles are getting a reprieve! On the bright side the ocean is 82 here and I since I swim every day it is nice to not use the pool for a change.

I'm up north, on the east end of Long Island, so we are not so lucky with the ocean temperature, but you get used to the cold water pretty quickly. And when I don't want to deal with it, I keep the pool at 89 degrees.

Looks amazing. Did your detailer do a full paint correction before the ceramic coat? Paint looks amazing. I'm hoping to get similar results from my pretty badly faded and swirled paint after a full paint correction and coating.

Thanks! Yes, the first day was all paint correction. He didn't get to the coating until the second day. He said that my paint was really good compared to most 2017's he has done, but it still took him a whole day of work before it was ready for the coating.

I have Opticoat Pro Plus on my vehicle, and it's held up great for the past almost 5 years. Never have to wax and use the optimum no-rinse to wash it in the garage without any fuss. After a wash it really shines well and looks great.

The detailer who did it also does Gtechniq and says both are good. I'll plan to get one of the two on my next vehicle.

I have a ceramic coating on both my cars (GTechniq Crystal Serum Light topped with EXO)

2 years for the G
1 year for the CTR

Both are doing great

I believe CSL is supposed to last 3 - 5 years depending on maintenance

I find I rarely keep my cars for that long anyway. If I did, I would likely repolish and reapply anyway by the 3 year mark

It's great for providing easier washes (your car is supposed to be glossier and more hydrophobic with a ceramic coating)

You do need to be careful in certain instances. Ceramic coating isn't a force field so people expecting that rocks should magically fly off their car will be sorely disappointed. Ceramic coating is actually more prone to water spotting so if you get nailed by hard water (let's say from a sprinkler system), you'll want to make sure you get that water off your car ASAP particularly with black paint

I have noticed that the water spots are more prominent. Clearly, prevention is best, but what do you use to get them off once they are there?

im big on diy but water spots are such a pain

ill dry some easy solutions like optimums mdr or carpro spotless but if that doesn’t work, i usually will bring it to my local trusted detailer

ive seen him using wheel acid, a heat gun, flat out repolishing, all stuff that i don’t want to attempt myself

Those are safe to use with the ceramic coating?

A little diluted vinegar and water will remove hard water spots, followed by your favorite ceramic cleaner.

Ceramic Pro "Care" works nicely. Just spray it directly over the water spots or bird droppings and then wipe off with a high quality microfiber towel.

I don't want to start a whole new thread about this, but I just wanted to get some opinions on the best place to put a really obtrusive Beach Vehicle sticker. I like to ride on the beach, and every time I get a new SUV, this is always a challenge. Plus, they make the sticker so that once it goes on, there is no way of taking it off in one piece, which I guess is good because these stickers are a hot commodity. You have to show proof of home ownership to get one, so regular vacationers can't just ride on the beach.

This sticker really doesn't look good anywhere, but I saw a G at dinner last night with the sticker on the rear window. To me, it seems like slightly less of an eyesore than on the bumper. I took a pc. What do you guys think?

I'd rather keep it on the window than on the bumper...also, while I don't know of any beaches people can drive on in CA, I power wash the underside of my car with an attachment after parking *next* to the beach lol

Yeah, the window is better, right?

I have never power washed under my vehicles before, but it's probably not a bad idea.

Yes, with all the potential rust issues on G Classes, I spray the bottom down with one of
these these
or something similar.

If it were me I would just tape it onto the back window only on the days we go on the beach but would not stick it on permanently. Eyesore for sure.

Man that is an ugly looking sticker. I'd have a hard time mounting that permanently anywhere. How about this: Cut a piece of rigid plastic like the material used on MB front plate brackets. Glue the piece on to the rubber insert for the hitch receptacle and glue the sticker on the cut to size surface. When you go to the beach simply insert into the hitch receptacle and when you're done remove and keep in the trunk. You could also buy a second rubber insert to use on a regular basis. Just a thought.

+1 The window tint would tone it down a bit too when taped to the inside face of the glass.

I put my stickers on clear film and/or laminate them so all I have to do it put them on the inside of the window when needed and take them off when not.
