I’m having an Akrapovic evolution exhaust system fitted next week with link pipes to my (2019 G63AMG). I will then be having it tuned to roughly 730BHP+
I’m trying to make the desion whether I go a bit further and also delete the catalytic converter. I’ve been told that by deleting the CAT allows for the vehicle to be tuned even further (roughly 750BHP+) as well as making the sound of the vehicle more pronounced / deeper and aggressive. I like the sound of all of those things!
Does anyone have any experience of going that step further, is it worth the effort forgetting about the cost? Anything to watch out for? I know it SPANKS my warranty but the tune does that anyway in the UK so might as well go full HOG!
You'll get most of the benefits of not having any, you will not pollute/smell and not throw any CELs.
These days, with modern engine management systems, tuned intakes and tuned exhausts, in some cases, removing the cats may actually reduce power/torque because of the change in back pressure.
I see from your profile that you are in GB (Great Britain?) - don't you have an annual MOT inspection there? And wouldn't a cat delete be a fail?
2017 G550 ,2018 S63 amg Coupe,2019 AMG G63,2021 AMG 63 (on order),2021 G550 (on order)
You will hate the smell if you remove the primary cats. You truck will stink from the fumes. Defintely remove the petrol particulate filter for more flow with a connecting pipe.I would too put on sport cats instead.
Sounds good. I like the raspyness. Throaty with a deep pitch. That exhaust sound reflects power. In my Vette days we used resistors to plug into the O2 bung lead after removing the cats to fool the computer. No check engine light and air/fuel mixture was fine.
I haven't found any good long tube headers with big collectors for the G. Custom long tubes and no cats would wake that ***** up and sound like a beast. Crackle and popping on de-accel. Love that. It would probably need a tune though.
This G sounds pretty good, not sure what he did to it but he beats the **** out of that truck and it doesn't skip a beat. It is rare for "off-road" G video clips to have this action and sound.

Have you ever had a car without cats? Just wondering because the smell (depending on cars) is just too much for some people.
I think your plan to de-cat should be fine. If in the event you love the sound, but are annoyed by the smell, then you can always have high flow cats welded in place of the cat-delete pipes.

I had a '94 Viper years ago without cats, which is why I said what I said!
Can someone please point me in the direction of a Sports CAT for a 2019 (new shape) G63?
I need to make my mind up by Monday, thank you for all your comments.. Overwhelming sport to ether keep the cats in place or move to Sports Cats. Going to speak to the garage and take some further advice today..
FYI: When I went down to check out the garage they had a Farrari 488 with deleted cats and the smell was fine and the sound was incredible!
So I thought I would update this thread as I’m now the other side of my G63AMG performance upgrade:
So I’ve had a Titanium Evolution Akrapovic Exhaust (limited Black edition) system with link pipes fitted. I then had DMS tune the vehicle.
The garage were very good and installed it in parts so I could hear how the car sounded at each stage. So first was the exhaust installation, it only sounded marginally better (the OPF stays in place) and this is what most people do as you don’t require a remap. So I went further to achieve my goal of a great sounding G63AMG..
The second part is more intrusive which is having the OPF filter removed and Akrapovic link pipes installed. These obviously attach to the Akrapovic exhaust and the original header pipes that link to CAT and the Engine.
Wow that part of the work made one hell of a difference, it sounds unbelievable - like a spitfire when the flaps are open. Removing the CAT and installing a sports CAT was just not required. It probably would have been too loud, trust me when I say the sound is epic!
DMS (UK tuner) then remapped the vehicle, that part feels a little bit of a dark art as they just tell you that you are now rolling with 750BHP. I don’t NOT believe them but i want to know so I’m going to get it on a Dyno to see.... It actually feels much smoother in Sport+ than the stock vehicle did.
That looks very nice. They did a great job. Post a rev clip. I'd love to hear it.
As an aside, the stinky chemical smell and sometimes sulfur-like smell from exhaust is directly caused by the cat. My experience matches yours at Ferrari, cat-less vehicles don't stink.
Awesome, do you know how much would be the cost of the first stage only? I mean the minimum to reach just the aesthetics goal. I love the tips, did you get them directly by Akrapovich or from a dealer?

Thanks a lot in advance.
It looks like in the US it’s about $8,000 for the first stage (I’m in the UK), the tips came from a main dealer. The fitting of the first stage is very easy, no remap is required ether. The tips are limited edition ones, I’m sure you might be able to locate them in the US - they are a limited run.
