Hi Folks! Has anyone been successful with replacing the back up camera in a 2013 to 2018 g class? (maybe something you have done with a radio upgrade?) I don't want to change the dash equipment and touch screen (yet but I do want the larger touch screen one day...but that's in the future).
My reason to change the camera is it is not in the best position for reversing....the spare tire is in the way so you cannot see if you are going to hit something.
I have installed a license plate frame back up camera on other cars (but with a new stereo update and I had to run a wire from the rear license plate through the car to the dash. I really do not want to attempt that. My thought was the wire to the back up camera must be in the rear door....so it should be easy to get to it and extend the wire to a new camera on a license plate frame. What do you think? Do you think the camera will still show the steering wheel position too (not a huge deal if it doesn't)? (these cameras are like $25 to $75 on amazon)
Can anyone comment on how satisfied they are with their screen. Satisfaction level for me is 7/10. Its a beautiful and much needed upgraded but i am plagued with glitches. Half the screen randomly goes darker or blank, pixels etc.. Took it back to the supplier and he replaced my unit with an "upgraded" version with inbuilt CarPlay. way better than the previous unit and definitely beats OEM. But yet Again, i experienced same glitches. (I should mention these glitches are random and don't happen often. I would say it happens 5% or less of time.
Trying to find out if i am a one off and just have had back luck with the two screens i have been provided OR if anyone else has experienced the same issues. These units are great and would be better if they ran efficiently with no glitches.

You're supposed to get your watch in the picture, not a BK cup.
Hi Folks- I gave the camera replacement idea a bit more thought. Issue is the rear camera position doesn't really let you see if your spare tire is going to hit anything (i.e when parallel parking). I know I asked if anyone has been successful with replacing the camera (maybe with the radio upgrade), but maybe that isn't needed. It seems like relocating it to just be mounted under the spare wheel cover (aligning with the face of the cover) is all that is needed. The camera sits in the large housing on the door. What are the chances the camera has enough slack in the wire to move it about 3' lower? Has anyone opened the rear door inside panel to see the cord? Any idea how this panel opens?
Hello everyone, I am completely satisfied with my screen bought from DMP, today it works perfectly, I have no problem, I upgraded it a bit by adding their 3D camera, the rendering is rather nice. that I haven't calibrated them yet. For the inside of the rear door, all you have to do is unscrew the inner cuff, you have 2 plastic covers to remove and you unscrew them, then you remove the door panel. I therefore changed the OEM camera, this one is simply clipped into its support that you can unscrew from the inside, attached some photos
NICE Upgrade! How does the 3D camera work? Do you have to install more than 1 camera (to get all 4 sides of the truck). I think the 2019+ might offer this, but it looks like yours is 2018 or older as well. The 3d camera might solve my issue of not being able to see if the spare tire is going to hit something.
Which 3D camera system did you use? I've been researching these for retrofit but have not seen that many good reviews on aftermarket systems that aren't crazy expensive.
