Hi Folks! Has anyone been successful with replacing the back up camera in a 2013 to 2018 g class? (maybe something you have done with a radio upgrade?) I don't want to change the dash equipment and touch screen (yet but I do want the larger touch screen one day...but that's in the future).
My reason to change the camera is it is not in the best position for reversing....the spare tire is in the way so you cannot see if you are going to hit something.
I have installed a license plate frame back up camera on other cars (but with a new stereo update and I had to run a wire from the rear license plate through the car to the dash. I really do not want to attempt that. My thought was the wire to the back up camera must be in the rear door....so it should be easy to get to it and extend the wire to a new camera on a license plate frame. What do you think? Do you think the camera will still show the steering wheel position too (not a huge deal if it doesn't)? (these cameras are like $25 to $75 on amazon)

Can anyone comment on how satisfied they are with their screen. Satisfaction level for me is 7/10. Its a beautiful and much needed upgraded but i am plagued with glitches. Half the screen randomly goes darker or blank, pixels etc.. Took it back to the supplier and he replaced my unit with an "upgraded" version with inbuilt CarPlay. way better than the previous unit and definitely beats OEM. But yet Again, i experienced same glitches. (I should mention these glitches are random and don't happen often. I would say it happens 5% or less of time.

Trying to find out if i am a one off and just have had back luck with the two screens i have been provided OR if anyone else has experienced the same issues. These units are great and would be better if they ran efficiently with no glitches.

Hi Folks- I gave the camera replacement idea a bit more thought. Issue is the rear camera position doesn't really let you see if your spare tire is going to hit anything (i.e when parallel parking). I know I asked if anyone has been successful with replacing the camera (maybe with the radio upgrade), but maybe that isn't needed. It seems like relocating it to just be mounted under the spare wheel cover (aligning with the face of the cover) is all that is needed. The camera sits in the large housing on the door. What are the chances the camera has enough slack in the wire to move it about 3' lower? Has anyone opened the rear door inside panel to see the cord? Any idea how this panel opens?

Hello everyone, I am completely satisfied with my screen bought from DMP, today it works perfectly, I have no problem, I upgraded it a bit by adding their 3D camera, the rendering is rather nice. that I haven't calibrated them yet. For the inside of the rear door, all you have to do is unscrew the inner cuff, you have 2 plastic covers to remove and you unscrew them, then you remove the door panel. I therefore changed the OEM camera, this one is simply clipped into its support that you can unscrew from the inside, attached some photos

NICE Upgrade! How does the 3D camera work? Do you have to install more than 1 camera (to get all 4 sides of the truck). I think the 2019+ might offer this, but it looks like yours is 2018 or older as well. The 3d camera might solve my issue of not being able to see if the spare tire is going to hit something.

Which 3D camera system did you use? I've been researching these for retrofit but have not seen that many good reviews on aftermarket systems that aren't crazy expensive.

Hi Folks- after 4 years or so with the touchscreen I’m ready for a new upgrade. The system is just too glitchy with zlink. It doesn’t start up automatically and takes about a minute each time to go through the menus at start up. My pioneer aftermarket system in a 2011 car starts up quicker and is more reliable.

Since my original install, I have moved. I looking for a shop anywhere on Long Island that has done g wagon touch screen installs before. Does anyone have a recommendation? Thanks.

I've done these conversions in a number of cars. They largely all come from the same place and the difference is in the support. I have been very happy with mine overall. We have 3 iphones 'connected' so that does cause some inconvenience at times but not often. I hope you find a better solution but that will be tough!

Thanks- does your system automatically connect to car play? To me, that is the biggest ask. Right now I have to turn on the car, wait for the splash logo display (ok, I like that part!) Then wait for it to connect via bluetooth....about 20-30 seconds. Once it does, I have to get out of that app....swipe over to the zlink app, open it. wait for connection (and about 50/50 shot it connects in about 15 seconds...if it doesn't, I wait another 45 seconds before trouble shooting....lots of fun!)

that seems abnormal behavior. i have these aftermarket screens in two mercedes, including 2015 g550. one unit is android and the other is linux. both units will auto connect.

the android unit has some kind of sleep function such that, unless vehicle has sat for several days, it connects immediately without going through boot process. there's a setting that controls this behavior.. there's also a setting in both units to control whether it automatically connects or driver manually initiates connection. auto connection requires no action from driver. start vehicle, phone and screen connect, and audio plays.

Greetings,
I just purchased 2002 G500 and instead of in dash unit, I have installed $140 11" Carplay unit and connected to stock Command unit via AUX.
Did not want to disturb the Command unit but to add Carplay.

I purchased this unit from Amazon. Base fits perfect with the edge of center AC vent frame with double sided tape that is already applied.

That is a great solution for a G500.

i tapped into fuse box by driver side. Purchased wiring kit for using fuse tap. Installed grommet on the center speaker and routed all cables and wires through that. I will take some pictures later
