Oil pressure/temp gauges

Hello,

I have a 2016 G550 and I want to install oil pressure and oil temp gauges. From my research I noticed this vehicle uses the cartridge Oil filters and not the spin on, so using a sandwich plate will probably not work for this set up.

Does the G550 come with a sensor unit already installed? I know the AMG G Class has the AMG menu and I think it shows oil temp so I am guessing it must have one, or a place for one to be installed in the G550 but I could be wrong.

I am not sure if anyone makes a cartridge to. spin on filter conversion for the G550.

Any info on this project is greatly appreciated. Thanks

There are temp/pressure sensor adapters that use the oil pan drain plug but their accuracy in this location is unknown. Or you could consider a sensor adapter on the cartridge filter cover drain plug, but again accuracy is not known. Either would be interesting to investigate.

I was considering the oil pan for the temp sensor and was going to look for a port on the engine for the pressure sensor. I have heard the pan is good for the temp but I think the suggestion you made using the filter cover drain plug would be good as well (have not looked there yet), I have tee adapters that I can use to tap and use two sensors on it as well, also have one for the oil pan plug as well.

If I had a repair manual for the 2016 G550 I could see where the ports are on the engine that could be used for this but I have looked everywhere and cannot find a repair manual for this year and the M176 engine. I am currently away but when I get back next week I will start looking for places for the sensors and test the ones mentioned above.

Thanks for the info.

The filter cover drain plug thread is an M20-1.5 (I think). I posted a photo of this at https://mbworld.org/forums/g-class-w...il-change.html. You might have to machine a custom part for this because of the o-ring, and you'd need to make sure your sensor probe is long enough to reach into the filter chamber. Attaching a T-adapter and hanging the sensors outside of where the oil circulates might not be any better than the oil pan drain plug alternative, and you'd need to ensure sufficient mechanical support or the sensor mass vibration stress might eventually crack the filter cover.

I often wonder if the Israeli Army drives its G-wagons all the way back to the Tel Aviv MB dealership every time a check engine light comes on.

Oh this is very interesting. I did not know of that filter cover drain plug, I will see if this could be a possible location for tapping in the sensors.

Thanks for the great info.
