2002 g500 headunit replacement options

stock COMMAND unit wont play or eject CD's anymore and Id love to have bluetooth to connect with my iphone

I don't have a stock amplifier or subwoofer (nothing under drivers seat)

Am I able to replace the factory head uint with something like this or am I getting in deep the second I remove the COMMAND?

For your 2002, I believe you do not have an amplifier under the driver's seat. Replacing the COMMAND unit with a Single DIN and trim adapter plate should be straight forward. Just make sure you get the correct wire harness adapters and also pick up a CANBUS steering wheel module.

Here's a good thread for reference:

how make sure I get the correct wiring harness?

with a new Bluetooth capable head unit I will be removing the tele aid and not using the cd changer. Will I have a need for a fiberloop bridge at the wiring near the back of the head unit, or can i just ignore the fiber wiring?

Just to close the loop on this I ended up going with this headunit:

VDO HU

I have next to zero car audio experience but fortunately this radio has the same ISO female connectors as the stock Command unit. The speaker plug from the car clicked right in, The power plug was a little more difficult as I had to sacrifice (depin) my cigar lighter plug and add the ignition and illumination pins to the radio plug. Also had to move the 12v constant to a different pin number on the factory plug. No cutting/tapping wires and no additional wiring harness was necessary. The main LCD on the radio does not dim but all the other lights on the HU dim with the dimmer knob and the orange looks very factory.

Still need to figure out the steering wheel controls....

Nice work!

The continental/VDO units are the simplest looking units to add all the functionality needed for a Single DIN. You can always put some tinted film on the screen to reduce the brightness if it is bothersome at night.

For your 2002, apparently you'll need the PAC ControlPRO2 to sniff out the steering wheel controls. This is not what I used for my 2005 but apparently the electronics are different. Not sure how the install of the PAC module is either, but the 2002 G-Class is listed as compatible on their website.
