2002 g500 headunit replacement options
I don't have a stock amplifier or subwoofer (nothing under drivers seat)
Am I able to replace the factory head uint with something like this or am I getting in deep the second I remove the COMMAND?
Here's a good thread for reference:

Can you tell me anymore about:
how make sure I get the correct wiring harness?
what the MB part# 0005453384 does or is used for in this application?
VDO HU
I have next to zero car audio experience but fortunately this radio has the same ISO female connectors as the stock Command unit. The speaker plug from the car clicked right in, The power plug was a little more difficult as I had to sacrifice (depin) my cigar lighter plug and add the ignition and illumination pins to the radio plug. Also had to move the 12v constant to a different pin number on the factory plug. No cutting/tapping wires and no additional wiring harness was necessary. The main LCD on the radio does not dim but all the other lights on the HU dim with the dimmer knob and the orange looks very factory.
Still need to figure out the steering wheel controls....
The continental/VDO units are the simplest looking units to add all the functionality needed for a Single DIN. You can always put some tinted film on the screen to reduce the brightness if it is bothersome at night.
For your 2002, apparently you'll need the PAC ControlPRO2 to sniff out the steering wheel controls. This is not what I used for my 2005 but apparently the electronics are different. Not sure how the install of the PAC module is either, but the 2002 G-Class is listed as compatible on their website.
