Touch up paint for rock chips
Have you guys used Dr ColorChip product to touch up paint from rock chips ?
Any other recommendation besides the ones that the dealerships offer from the Parts Dept. ?
Thanks.

There are a couple of online sources such as Touchupdirect.com that sell MB G-class paint, guaranteed to match and in a variety of formats. Is there something about what the dealerships sell that we all should know about?

I used Dr ColorChip with obsidian black on ‘12 ML and ‘17 AMG GLE43 Coupe. It is easy to use (plenty of tutorial videos on YouTube) and the colour match is excellent; however, up close the outline of the chip can still be seen. Some areas have Dr ColorChip franchises that will provide the touchup services at your location, if you prefer to not apply it yourself. Good luck.

I tried it on my car, and I was disappointed. It’s cleaner than touch up paint but not much better at concealing things.

Just curious, did you placed the touch up paint next to the chip area and then smear it into the chip? It is a different technique than the traditional touch up paint products.

First thing - on "G's" "standard" non-metallic paint is one thing "metallic" paint are another - and "Magno/Matte" are another....
On "standard" paints - yes you can choose to DIY - the most important differences between available touch-ups is the included "brush". You can also choose a "pro" touch up service. Standard paints are robot applied.
On "metallic's" either DIY and Pro you will be disappointed with any brush touch-up. The metallic grains in your paint were sprayed on - any metallic manual touchup will not match - and in general will be darker and wont show the same metallic effect. Pro's can do a "bit" better than DIY - so let the Pro tell you what your expectation should be. Metallic paints are robot applied
On "Magno" DIY will be a disaster - and let a Pro tell you what your expectation should be - and frankly if they are honest all hand touch up is bad... and only Top Magno Certified MB Collision Center (which are about 1 out of 20) or Top Ultra-Luxury shops can choose to even spray repair Magno. Each Magno job on a G is done in layer's by hand - and the Magno layers are mixed-by-hand-custom for each G - then sprayed by hand - so the layers. especially the "top coat" need to be measures and precisely mixed with experience to have a respray done "righteous". If you have two exact Magno's side by side - and go over both with a experienced paint/body guy - both will be different to a expert - in the trade we call this "Magno Fingerprint"

Yes I followed the directions, put the blob beside the chip, ran it over with a gloved finger, then used the compound to remove excess.
It’s cleaner in that the compound removes the excess surrounding the chip, but then you are left with a chip that’s body colored instead of black or grey, which is the same thing you have with touch up paint.
I wasn’t expecting it to make the chip disappear completely but for the price I don’t think it was worth it compared to $10 for a bottle of touch up paint.

I recently bought some touch-up paint from this seller and I was surprised how good it is for the price. It takes a little while to arrive but it is worth it: https://www.ebay.com/str/Genuine-Col...p2047675.l2563

I saw a YouTube video of a guy trying to be helpful but was doing it wrong and perhaps not getting the best results.
Appreciate the feedback 👍
