Off Road Wheels that are versatile

Hey Everyone,

Living in the U.K. we don’t deal with snow that often but I do take my G63 (2019) off road. I have the 22inch wheels with the standard tyre that it came fitted with.

I’m considering buying a new set of wheels and tyres for off roading and the winter months. However in the U.K. we do tend to do a fair bit of motorway driving, I’m not off road all the time. So what would you recommend, I don’t need the extreme off road tyres something that is versatile for wet mud / off roading and road diving. I guess then I just need to choose a new set of impressive wheels (clearly they need to look impressive), recommendations most welcome on tyre and wheel choice.

Thank you.

Hi YoYo898, I think the choices are really limitless on this. For occasional offroading, I would take a look at BFG KO2's and Nitto Terra Grappler, they are a hybrid sort of tires. They are quiet on the road but have good offroad performance as well. If you want to go bit more aggressive, I would look at Toyo Open Country RT or Nitto Ridge Grappler. These are more aggressive on the their treads but also fairly quiet on the road. But if you are just looking for more aggressive looks, I would go with pure M/T tires but they are loud and not so great in the rain. I have ran all these tires and I love the Nitto Ridge Grappler the best. It fits my needs perfectly. Hope this helps.

I would second the BFG KO2's. I think they're pretty quiet overall and on the highway cruising at 75mph, and the exhaust is louder anyways.

From the opposite perspective of Vader, there are more highway A/T tires to also consider that work ok offroad, but are more geared for the highway. Something like the Continental TerrainContact A/T, the Bridgestone Dueler series, Goodyear Wrangler Series...There are definitely more here.

A lot will also depend on which size wheel you end up going with. For a winter tire most people downsize wheels to have more tire thickness, so going down to a 20" may be your best bet to have the largest selection of available tires.

The G63 AMG with the Trial Package that I don’t have comes with 20 INCH RIM SET G-CLASS W463 TRAIL PACKAGE BLACK MATTE GENUINE MERCEDES-BENZ. I like these alloys a lot:

https://www.kunzmann.de/shop/en/tire...cedes-benz.htm

And they come with these types of tyres: Pirelli Scorpion Winter 275/50 R20 113V XL, MO

What’s your view, they look ok for what I need..

I'm a big fan of the trail package wheels as I like the look a lot. The 20" size will give you better options for an All Terrain tire. The winter tires won't be right for your purpose though.

Why won’t they be right, not enough tread or too much tread? They look less aggressive than all of the ones recommended above and more versatile. Thank you.

They will be good for winter weather, but depending on what type of off roading you do, they may not be ideal. For general on-road winter weather driving, they will probably work well. I have no experience with the Pirelli Scorpion Winters so cannot comment on how they perform.

Thanks - it’s more general off roading, nothing extreme. I’m often in muddy fields but then during the week I could be back in the city. So just wanted an alternative set of wheels for the winter months that might offer a little more than my 22 road wheels that the vehicle came with.
