Unhappy G63 Vibration under hard acceleration from 0-100

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and am impressed by the support you all give each other with issues and questions.

I have recently brought a 2017 G63 and had a few issues which have led to various parts being replaced under warranty. Unfortunately one issue still remains and that is vibration under hard (full) acceleration in 1st gear followed with same vibration shortly into 2nd gear. The vibration disappears into second and can't be felt under acceleration in any other gear.

I have driven numerous other G63's as has a friend who drove my car and agreed this isn't something he'd experienced before. The car is now in Mercedes and they cannot find the fault, despite agreeing it was not normal when they initially took the car in. Having replaced a driveshaft (under warranty) and called me to collect the car, the vibration still remained the same as before. I've just received a call from Mercedes to say they have now checked two other cars and that they have the same vibration so its NORMAL.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem and can you help me understand who I can contact in Mercedes (I live in the middle east) for technical support/advice to ensure the issue gets sorted?

Thanks and all the Best,
Dave

Have you tried associating the vibration with engine RPMs and not just hard acceleration? If you're able to use manual mode for the transmission, put it in 1st and take note of the engine RPM range where the vibration occurs. Then do the same for 2nd, 3rd, etc. This will reveal whether the vibration is engine related or drive train related, assuming that the vibration is caused by some rotational induced resonance. If the vibration always occurs within the same RPM range, it's engine related. If the RPM range changes, it's more likely drive train related.

Thank you streborx - its throughout the rev range in 1st gear. so from 700rpm through to 6500 (whatever the max is for a g63?), it vibrates. There is nothing felt in 2nd 3rd or onwards.

Cheers,
Dave

This sounds like a 'Torque Steer" type of issue due to the amount of torque the motor is putting down in 1st and 2nd under hard acceleration. This would point to things like motor/transmission mounts and possibly transfer case mounts. The other thing to check (maybe independent of the dealer) is to make sure the wheels/tires are balanced VERY WELL. What tires are you currently running, as if they are slipping for some weird reason, it could cause drivetrain vibrations.

Do the service records indicate that the transmission fluid & filter were changed at 40K to 50K miles (65 - 80 KM)?

thank you for your reply

I think it’s on Michelins but can’t be sure as I only brought it 2 months ago. There were know balancing issues as far as I could feel at the usual 70mph or 90mph areas that I’ve noticed balancing being a problem previously in other cars. The car does spin a little and I’ve tried with and without traction control activated but there’s no difference. To be honest the vibration is most noticeable when there’s no wheel spin which points me to transmission or possible torque converter?

yeah I believe that transmission oil was changed during that previous (major) service at around 40k miles. It’s just had another recent service for oil and filters. They replaced 3 shock absorbers under warranty followed by the engine mount/shock absorbers.

IMO, all 4 shocks should have been replaced. New engine mounts needed on a 5 year old truck? Did this truck spend most of its life hauling overweight trailers?
