Question Aftermarket springs and shock recommendations for a 2017 G63?

Hello,

I take my G63 off road and have been using stock suspension since I've acquired the vehicle. The only thing I have changed is adding 32" tires. I am wondering what Shock Absorbers you guys recommend for this truck? Springs?

The goal is to make the ride more comfortable on and off road, while maintaining or improving vehicle durability and reliability.

Part of me is considering getting Ohlin shocks because they don't require trimming to add, and keeping the stock springs. One concern I have is that the shocks and springs made for G-Class may not have been made with the G63 in mind (extra weight, more power, etc.) and thus wouldn't perform as designed. What do you guys think?

Any way to add a winch to the G63?

Do you want any lift from the springs, or are you trying to stay the stock height? Ohlins makes nice shocks, and from what I hear they make the ride more comfortable. I've only every installed Fox shocks, so I can't comment on any others in terms of ride quality. Yes, a winch can be added, although it takes some doing on the G63 because you have to relocate the center radiator, and fab up the mounts for it. There isn't a "bolt-on" solution that I'm aware of. I'd suggest getting a winch on a reciever mount, and run the Warn wiring to the rear hitch. You can remove it and stow it in the back, but I'd suggest finding a way to mount it inside the rear cargo area. That's a lot of unsecured weight that could fly around in case of an accident.

I'd look to see what King Shocks offers as they're tunable (shim stack, not on the fly) & rebuildable. I run 3.0s on my daily 2500 Ram & they eat up bumps & jumps.

No relation to these guys, but here's an example

Thanks! How did you like the FOX shocks compared to OEM? Is it more comfortable than stock, I know that there are multiple settings, what settings do you run?

I'll look into the rear mount winch, but a bolt on solution to the front would be vastly preferable and ideal.

I have Fox 2.0's on my 05 G55 with G63 springs. It's much better than OE, but still a little bit juddery at times. You'll have to do cutting on your G63 to get them to fit. Most annoying thing about the Fox's is the front remote reservoir lines are so short you can't remote mount them anywhere.

I think the King's also require cutting, where the Ohlin's don't, but that is only what I've read from the forums. Koni Raid Shocks are also a fan favorite that are semi-adjustable (but much much cheaper).

I didn't want to lift (yet) and thought AMG springs would be important to keep the balance right, so went with 63 springs over the softer G500/550 springs. I'm also on 285/60R18 BFG KO2's (32") I don't find that the Fox 2.0's pair that well with the G63 springs. I have to run them on 3-4/8 clicks for the shock damping to match well with the stiffer springs, and at that point, the ride is stiffer than desired (for me - but still much better than the OE suspension setup). Running them softer keeps the chassis bouncing around from side to side.

So I'll be switching over to G550 springs soon to make it more comfortable. In your situation, you can switch shocks and see how you like the ride, and then decide if you want to go with lift springs, or softer springs.

I just purchased some ORC/Eibach Heavy springs and Koni Raid shocks for my 2017 G550 from Jack Wagon Overlanding. It will give about a 40mm lift and from everything I've read/been told, will give a nicer ride overall as well. Mine spends more time off pavement than on.

We recommend Ohlins Shocks and ORC Springs or Eurowise Springs.
Also ORC or Letech offers a Front Winch Mount

DM us if you need pricing or more details.

Thank you!

I ran Fox's on our 13' G63 - but opted for the Raids on the new 55 build and am very impressed.....I have them in Medium and they feel planted and smooth. I've run Ohlins, Icon's and AVD's on various builds - but I'm not sure there's a real gain on the G based on my experience so far.... I will be adding some extra HP and changing to JWO's 4" lift and will be curious to see how that works out.... my biggest concern on my G63 build was the springs being up to the tuned HP ( roughly 680 with E40 tune and intake), I drove a friends 63 with the viking springs and it wasn't much fun at speed, much tippier then I'd like.

The winch on a 63 will take custom work unless you're willing to have it mounted outboard - I was chasing a fab co for one before it got totalled....but it was a 3-4 custom project and really wasn't ideal......
that's a big part of the decision for the 55 this go around....

Hey @Texas E63

I read on another one of your posts that you have/had a G63 running 305/55/20 tires. What offset wheels were you running, and did you have any lift?

I am currently running 275/65/18 on my 17 G63 without any lift. Wheels are Alpha Equipt 18” (ET25 offset).

I want my next set to be 265/70/18. I do not want to lift the vehicle as I’ve done almost everything I’ve wanted to do off road wise, but would like a little bit more height without swapping out the G63 springs.

also I decided to go for the Koni Raid shocks! I’ll report how they are after installing.

Morning -

On the G63 I ran a custom Forgestar 20x10.5 ET25 that allowed max stance without a spacer... I had a 40mm spring spacer on the truck and the 305's cleared perfectly ( I test fit 35's as well but they had a lower speed rating)

On the G55 I have currently I'm running a 325/65 on Alpha's like yours -and had a 50mm spring spacer on it and they worked perfectly, but have since gone to a fully dialed 4" lift ...

I am running the Koni Raids and very happy so far - with the lift I did have Eurowise put their Extenders on - and may opt for a set of adjustables down the road to have more flexibility in ride ....

What's your goal ? not sure I understand the narrow tire choice unless you're in the snowbelt ....

Cheers

Hey @Texas E63 thanks for the quick response!

for the tires I am interested in AT3W Falken Wildpeaks, the 265 and 275 are actually the same width, but the 265/70/18 is .5” taller.

I don’t wanna push it, but just a little bit more height and sidewall would be the goal!

Gotcha - the wider tires will certainly both add to ride /handling quality and protection of the rim. 285/65's at least would fit with no issues- OD32.6"

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just put the ohlins adjustable shocks on my 2016 G63 and I was wondering what settings you guys are using? There are 20-something clicks and the literature that came with the shocks is pretty sparse. I’m concerned mostly with getting a softer ride.

You generally tune shocks to the sprung weight. If that's not in the literature, then start at 10-11 & adjust accordingly.
