2017 G550 - candidly, should I buy?

Hey MB folks - proud owner of a 2015 e350 that I am looking to trade in for an SUV and of course the G wagon is first on my list.

Found what I feel to be a fair price with room to negotiate, but wanted to get folks thoughts from the community who have more experience.

2017 g550
84k miles
clean title and service records
polar white, with black / designo deep blue Napa leather

concerns:
- CARFAX has split service and ownership between Florida and Massachusetts
- east coast exposure could mean corrosion / rust but won’t know until I see in person
- 84k miles is close to 90k and 100k - what should be expected / potentially expected / to watch out for?

thanks to all in advance!

We have owned 3 of these beasts

this car looks very clean and the fact that it’s being sold from a dealership is a good thing in my opinion. However I would ask the Dealership to have the technician do a corrosion inspection and put it in writing. They might balk at that, then you have to see the vehicle for yourself( don’t use lemon squad - total waste of money). At 84K, you will have issues with some parts- batteries, windows, wipers, aux batt, etc - usually not any big deals but they can add up. These are military vehicles adapted to the civilian world so- things need to be replaced on occasion.
-rust/ corrosion can be a big deal - $$$$ and from my experience, selling from a dealership is no insurance that the truck will be corrosion free. Even with a PPI - significant corrosion can be missed. You have to get the wagon and look closely. All Door hinges, wiper mounts, and all window seals just to start.
i know this probably sounds a little scary but these are incredible trucks and really fun to drive- if you can score a clean vehicle, work through the small but important MX issues and remediate any corrosion issues- you will really enjoy it. Good luck

Exactly. My 17 with 65k has had 2 rust issues. MB paid for the windshield but flat out refused to cover the rear hatch handle and window both of which have rust. Side note, I have a commercial dehumidifier in my garage set to 35%. The customer relations is beyond horrible. They make like they're doing you a favor by listening to and then denying your request for help. I would also look into warranty options. MB offers nothing passed CPO so I sold myself (Toyota dealer) an Allstate warranty for three years. Well worth it for the peace of mind alone.

You didn't mention price, but I'm guessing maybe around $80K? For that much, I'd rather have a new Lexus GX.

To the OP, I hope you know what youre getting into. I still have my 2015 G but its now been moved to "toy" status. Not sensible or useful. Cant haul much either.

The new Lexus is not on par with a G Wagon as anyone who has sat in both will tell you the Lexus is now more of just a badged Toyota. There is nothing that has the solidness of a G Wagon. Totally different SUV's

There are so many low mile ones out there just wait and get the right one.

Just saying I'd rather have a new vehicle than one 7 years old with 84K miles on its clock and the prospect of unknown maintenance costs. My '19 G550 has had 5 recalls in 4 years. My '08 rebadged Toyota had 0 recalls over 11 years and no problems over 93K miles. Solidness has many metrics.

A 08 and a 2024 Lexus are two very different SUV's as the Toyota comment applies to the 24.

As far as recalls that has nothing to do with reliability its more of a mfg being accountable.

Agree a newer car is always the better bet but for $80k he can get a sub 30k G550 in that price range that would be a much better SUV if that is style one is looking for. Heck, I sold my G63 for $85k.

The sooner you admit to yourself the G isnt generally a sensible vehicle, then you look at it differently. Fortunately for me with my kids grown, I now have a few impractical vehicles. I relegate the practical to be the wife's daily.

I have no illusions about the G's sensibility. Here in Colorado, my G is "go anywhere any season" sensible transportation. Would a Jeep Rubicon do 99.9% as much for half the price? Yes. Should I drive a Rubicon so my kids can drive new Porsches to my funeral? I think not.

Car is sold but debate lives in lol

A sensible mb suv would be the ML. Cheap and works well with more rear room. But no one buys g for a sensibly. It’s just a fun and badass car unlike anything else.

Rust rust RUST lol

Honestly be prepared to spend 30+ minutes inspecting every surface, corner and crease for corrosion. Even the roof! Corrosion repair can become extremely expensive very quickly. If you see any, run.

I have a dehumidifier and fans in mine, too. You still need to perform thorough oil/grease applications to help prevent rust though.

Mind sharing that warranty info and shoot me a DM? I had good luck with extended warranty from IWI Group before some years ago; very easy to deal with for repairs, it wasn't corrosion though so it's good to hear some are good dealing with this.

And good luck to that GX550 idea, as a new Tundra owner about to turn it in from a lease, not soon enough, the cheapness and horrible customer service plus that motor recall, way past enough for me. New Toyotas aren't the old ones, they've been drunk on their own Koolaid a while now, LC200/5th Gen 4R/GX460 is the last of that here in the states... and 85k for a turbo 4cyl 1/2 LandCruiser isn't happening, insanity.

We should round up clients for a class action.
