For me personally its V8 or bust for the G. MB's hybrids have known issues, will be pricier to maintain in the long term, probably wont sound as nice, adds unnecessary weight to what is already a very heavy car, wont be as special or hold their value as well as ICE G's and all of this for a higher MSRP as well.

For the non AMG I agree hold onto the V8. For AMG there are supposed to be some improvements in driving dynamics if these random auto websites are to be believed.
I’m interested in seeing what interior improvements there are.

Everyone is different and for some the flex of just having the newest is all they want.

I mean just look at the major improvements they made in the V8 between last generation and the current one.

Personally, a G hybrid sounds about as exciting as kissing my sister. The whole point of a hybrid is fuel economy, and adding a 1000 lbs of motors and batteries to an existing V8 doesn't seem possible or practicable. I would expect the ICE to be downsized, maybe all the way to a 4-banger. Jeep Wrangler's 4xe dumped the standard 3.6L V6 for a 2L I4, and while turbo'd, owner reaction is generally meh. I'm fine with my G's V8, and its 18 mpg isn't bankrupting me.

I don't think anybody will be disappointed if they go with a similar setup to the S580/GLS580. Those, although hybrids, pretty much behave like a traditional V8 non-hybrid.

Am I the only one that thinks the Electric G is going to be insane? It will probably be faster and have longer range than a G63. I get 9mpg city / 13mpg highway if I think about it driving responsibly with the throttle (I don't do this). Sub 300mi for a full a tank of gas is not idea.. The idea of charging overnight and never seeing a gas station again is pretty appealing. I spend more time at the fuel pump than I care to admit. I expect these will sell well and probably be 300k out the door.

You mean "stupendously fabulous" by describing it as "insane"? I think it will be "insane" in the conventional definition of insanity. How many $300K EV G-Wagons will need to be sold to make a measurable impact on global CO2 emissions? Every car manufacturer's EV business is bleeding red ink right now, EV start-ups have lost most of their market value, and order books are drying up. GM just halted production of its Chevy Blazer EV for quality and technical problems. Yeah, there's always Tesla that makes its ink black with government subsidies and carbon credit sales. The U.S. is currently in a nationwide deep-freeze, and many EV owners are discovering that even if they can find a charging station, batteries don't charge at -5F (and they can't run the car heater to stay warm while the battery isn't charging). Once you get over the thrill of 0-60 mph in 2.1 seconds and discover you can get only a couple of these out of a charge, reality sets in. And don't forget to budget a couple thou to have an electrician wire your garage for a level 2 charger. Never seeing a gas station again might be appealing -- never seeing a charging station is the way it really is.
The clean energy future is ICE hydrogen/hybrid with much more powerful and longer lasting solid state batteries. Current EVs are destined to the junk yard as soon as their batteries go bad and dealers know that. Hence the horrendeous depreciation rates. And as consumers have become more aware they have stopped buying them.

But all the manufacturers who pledged to produce only EVs after 2030 are surely having second thoughts about it.

I love EVs but I agree an EV-only setup is not sustainable in the near future.
The key is leasing - my $100k 2024 BMW iX that I leased at 20% off with a residual value of $55,000 after 36 months, 30,000 miles is already worth $55,000 with 4,200 miles in. That's $4,200 a month depreciation!

Damn I was just looking at a 2024 iX to replace my wife’s X3 M. Was also considering a lease since they are offering $10k in incentives among other discounts for current BMW owners. Hard to swallow that level of depreciation though even on a lease. Every time I consider an EV I keep coming back to the realization that these are basically big iPhones and once the batteries go south the value of the car will be crap. How do you like the vehicle otherwise?

Lots of ambitious EV intentions announced last year (https://www.gearpatrol.com/cars/g389...oing-electric/). 2024 will be a year of reckoning for all of them.

You don't have to worry about the level of depreciation with the lease--it's BMW's problem. Make sure you shoot for 10-12% off before incentives. Can answer more questions via PM if you'd like!

Vehicle is good once you get over the front. It's not as ugly to me as when I first saw it but it's not a looker either. Interior is really nice and comfortable. I have the 50 so it's fast enough and drives well for what it is.

Yes this was the first lease I've done. To me leasing makes sense for those who can deduct depreciation through an LLC, want a new car every 3 years no matter what, cannot afford the car otherwise, or now want to drive an EV.
I will say watching the miles is a bit annoying but it is nice not to have to worry about depreciation or if the car gets into a fender bender any diminished value. Leases automatically come with gap insurance too, so if the car is ever totaled the lease is done and I walk free (which is why one should never put a down payment on a lease but rather do security deposits).
That would be my one fear of getting a G EV but I think Mercedes will be smart and keep supply low enough.
