Rear Bumper plugs/insert removal

Does anyone know how to remove the rear bumper inserts (silver pieces in the pic) on the W463A? It looks like it can just be pried off with a trim removal tool, but I didn't want to break the part if there was some other trick to it. I looked behind the bumper, and there are 4 mounting pins/points that look like they are inserted into some retention clips. I assume I can pull these off and then put them back on, but I wanted to check to see if anyone else has done this with success. Thanks!

The fasteners visible from the backside of the bumper look like pop-rivets to me. If yours are the same, they aren't removable, and are inserted from the bumper's outside. Likely, they secure one or more retention clips under the bumper trim piece that it clips onto. My guess is that the trim pieces pop off with a plastic wedge tool, but don't take my word for it. You might stop at a body shop and ask if nobody on this forum can advise you.

That was going to be next step if nobody was able to confirm it for me. I'll run by my local bodyshop and see if they know. They are the main paint shop for the central MB dealer here, so they will probably know.

I was able to get a trim tool under the bottom of the cover, but I didn't want to pry too hard without checking with someone else first. Save myself the headache of having to replace them if I broke them!

Yup. The new wheels will be a Champagne gold color, so I'll be matching the grille guard, exhaust tips, spare tire ring, and hopefully the badges and bumper plugs. The tricky part will be getting it all to match since the material on all of those items is different. That will cause some variations in the shade/tone of each of them. Fingers crossed it will look as good as we are envisioning!

G Wagen Time Line

I’m in the waiting phase to get any info on my order. I’m also in the Houston area. If you don’t mind, how long did it take for Star to deliver your vehicle? I’m beginning to think my dealership is playing games with my order. I placed my order in early Feb ‘21. I have no status. Just checking on delivery time frames. Thanks.

Ordered September '20, and it just arrived last week. We thought we might not get it at all when they announced the stop in production, but got a PO and VIN shortly after that announcement and were told it was one of the last coming in to Houston. Not sure how accurate that is, but if you don't have a PO yet I'm thinking there might be cause for concern. Hopefully I'm wrong and you will get it soon!

We've done bronze already on the black magno one, so my wife wanted something a little different (and she likes the light gold wheels on white vehicles). Hopefully it will turn out as good as we think it will!

Thanks!

Thank you. I’m beginning to think the same thing. You’d think they would have the common courtesy to tell me instead of keeping me hanging on when th false hope. Waiting to hear back from them now. Those are the actions that have me concerned they’re playing games. Happy you got yours!

Indeed! Seems like there are tons of G's around town, and funny enough I've randomly run into a few people from this forum.

I'm dropping my wife's G63 off at the bodyshop this next week to let them figure this out and do some other paint work. I took it over there and discussed it with the tech. He said he will figure it out, and I will update once I get some feedback. I figured if he pulled the rivets out of the bumper he would be able to put them back in as well. Better than me trying to mess with it!

I took mine off and wrapped them in Black vinyl. I used a trim removal tool on one side and pushed from behind...came out easier than I thought it would:, and when done I just snapped them back in while starting at one side first.

I was referring to the backs - I did not have any on the front of my 2020 G550.

Did you remove the bumper? How did you push from behind? I tried with the trim tool but no luck. I cant reach behind the bumper i would need to remove the entire bumper.

I did not have to remove the bumper since I was able to pop them out from behind - stick your head under there and with a bright light you should be able to see the tabs holding them in place. Actually, I did the first one while on the bumper and then I thought about it and stuck my head under it and when I saw it would pop out I did so, which made it easier to wrap the other one.

you should come from the top for both the front and the rear ones..they are snug but come off easily with the trim removal tool and like @Bob Z. said no need to remove the bumper.. just as a precaution you can put some masking tape along the sides of the inserts so you don't damage the bumper paint..
