Advice on buying used 2019-2020 G Wagon
Hey all - enjoy reading the forum. My wife has decided she wants a G Wagon and so here I am. Had a couple of questions, would love to hear thoughts and opinions
Have done some research and seems last major remodel was in the 2019 model year, so am looking at either 2019 or 2020 models. Max budget is prob $150k. A few questions for all the veteran shoppers on here
-Are there any particular watch outs to look for in either 2019 or 2020 models I should be aware of?
-Besides model upgrades (e.g. 550 vs G63) and extreme mileage differences, it's unclear to me what's driving such a wide range of prices; e.g. cheapest no damage 2019 on Autotrader is $118k but there's a ton of 2019's still priced around $150k or more
-How much negotiating room do y'all suspect exists in these used vehicles? Many of them seem to be listed for quite some time, would you start off with an offer 5k, 10k under?
I've been tracking the listings for a month or so and seems there is some compression of pricing on the lower end, will probably continue to monitor but hoping to make a purchase by year end. Appreciate the insights.

I've had my 2019 G550 for just over 3 years and have enjoyed it very much. There were a couple of inconsequential recalls early on, but aside from those I've been problem free over 15K miles. No squeaky brakes, rattles, or wind noise as a few others have reported. Obviously your best deal will come from a private party. Dealers are offering only a bit over $100K for low mileage excellent condition vehicles like mine, but are then marking them up substantially.

Just be patient and wait. The economy is about to hit the sh*tter, interest rates will keep rising as per the feds (at least in Canada). Food prices, rent and just about everything else is heavily inflated too. Im sure there are plenty out there that capitalized on the good times and over-extended themselves for this car. With a little bit of patience you can take advantage of some of these bag holders down the line as opposed to current prices.

If your wife doesn't care I would go for a G550 as it'll be more likely to be priced right and not inflated and will fit your budget nicely.
I don't know of any particular issues in the G class other than the recalls involving the rear doors not latching properly. There have been some other recalls for earlier models.
Some people reported that the air pressure inside the G is bothersome but I didn't notice that in mine. There was a fix for the rear vents I believe behind the cargo area windows.
I agree there are a lot of price differences. Some dealers selling cars with 13,000 miles for $25k more than other dealers selling with under 5,000 miles.
Negotiating room depends strictly on what the price of entry was for the dealer. I suspect the G used markets continue to be inflated because dealers have a lot of skin in the game and refuse to take losses. I think $5-10k is reasonable depending on the miles and how long the car's been in inventory.
Good luck!

Resale variance can be related to market, color and options. Cars with the designo interiors, Carbon Fiber treatments, Night Package and Magno paints are worth more in the marketplace than cars without.

I've mentioned previously in other threads a '19 G550 23K miles listed in Isringhausen's weekly WSJ ad. From its initial asking price of $200K last Feb, it's been gradually reduced and is listed this week at $150K. The used market, especially for G550s, continues to cool, and likely hasn't yet hit bottom. There are probably deals to be found in private party transactions.

Can I jump in here. I've experienced the modern 9 speed, but I'm looking at a 2019 with the older 7 speed. How much difference is there between the two?
Thanks.
Thanks.
