That's Android Auto and not CarPlay and yes it's normal. Apple CarPlay is full screen, though. It has to do with the fact that historically, Android Auto was very restrictive to what resolutions it supported. These ultrawide displays that MB uses were not really handled well by Android Auto, but also MB's implementation is restrictive. The redesigned Android Auto UI that has been rolling out to phones does technically support 21:9 displays, but MB didn't implement it such that it works. Apple however has supported ultrawide screens in CarPlay for a long time.
