Saw on CarScoops that a prototype of the upcoming g-Class was spotted during initial testing and thought some may be interested in seeing pictures, even with fairly heavy camouflage on the test vehicle.

Based on the photos, looks like the predictions from W205C43PFL, ILoveNY, Hodog16, and others of a Jimny-like vehicle are right on the mark. My spouse had a slightly different take, saying “It’s giving Kia Soul energy.” Ouch.

It'll be much smaller and a pure EV, based on what I've learned. It'll be comparable to the Suzuki Jimny, which is not available in the US. Completely different target demographics from the current G-Class. Check with @AmyC - she's close friends with the top executives at MB and AMG in Germany. Funny, she and I both got our G63s at around the same time and joined MBWorld, all without coordination. A few months later on we figured out we knew each other by happenstance - she's the daughter of a former esteemed colleague of mine (and remains a close friend) whom I've known for 20+ years. I practically watched her grow up. She would probably be your most reliable source of information on upcoming models.

 

This car looks silly. Personally I think it's the wrong move to create a low cost G-Wagon. If it were good looking then maybe but this looks wrong.

 

I totally agree with you as to its "silly" looks - for grownups. However, I can see how teenagers would love to have it as their first car. I actually think it's a smart move by MB to expand the G-Wagon's brand name to appeal to a younger audience whose parents may have limited resources. It mimics the looks of a G-Wagon but leaves little - if any - room for confusion between the two. I don't believe there would be any brand dilution from MB's business standpoint. Heck, if MB does a good job with this vehicle and is able to keep its price low, the young buyers may eventually become G63 owners when they grow up and have acquired the financial means. That would be good for all of us grownups (I'm using that term loosely as some of us may age but never truly become a "grownup") if this business model plants the seeds to breed a new incoming generation with a high demand for the G-Wagons in the near future.

 

Reserving judgement until seeing it in person, you never know maybe we will fall in love with it.

One detail I had not noticed with the earlier spy shots is that the g does not have the fender-mounted turn signal indicators that the G has. On the g, the indicators appear to surround the headlights instead.

It will be interesting to see whether Mercedes decides to offer the g with ICE powertrains or if the g is electric-only.

(As an aside, personally I disagree with the title of the article, “Mercedes G-Class Got Too Big and Expensive, The Little G Is Meant To Fix It.” The G has always been an expensive vehicle, and while the W463A/W465 G is a good bit wider and somewhat longer than the prior W463 G, it is not as long as a GLE, let alone a GLS. The G is tall but hardly a huge SUV.)
