100% as desirable
100% the cost
-50% as reliable
I'm considering both the electric G and electric Range Rover as a replacement for my EQE 500 SUV.

Land Cruiser has off-road cred but you'll get laughed at on a Jeep trail driving that Lexus. not electric though so not on my list.

Referring to the title and OP, what do you mean by compelling?
IMO, the G wagon has 3 aspects that distinguish it: the timeless/unique styling, the brute V8 engine, and fit/finish luxury.
If you want the squarest, exclusive lux vehicle on the road, then the G Wagon is tops ahead of a LE Defender 5.0 V8.
If you want a beastly off-road SUV that doesn’t need the luxury, then a 392 Wrangler or Bronco Raptor would be comparable….and more affordable to fix.
If you don’t need the uber-off-road capability and square look, then I think the Bentley Bentayga Lamborghini Urus are as unique and absurd.
Personally, I like the MB GLE and would consider that for a next vehicle.

Fair enough... though not as humorous as buying a new motor when it gets hydrolocked crossing a flooded road. Not a problem in an EV:

Most folks have been off-roading ICEs for decades without experiencing hydrolock -- victims tend to be those who believe crossing the Mississippi is only a question of "how long can you hold your breath?". I don't know enough about EVs to know how well packaged their drive trains are to protect against off road hazards. I would be concerned about the corrosive effects of salt that is dumped all over northeastern highways during winter. Easter Jeep week is next month in Moab -- about a 2 hour drive away. Maybe I'll swing through and count the extension cords. (Lol)

And 99.99999% of EV owners will never experience a fire, but that seems to be what some people focus on. In any case, there are plenty of videos on YouBoob of people off-roading in EVs so I won't bother posting any. But just as quick factoid, the hybrid electric Wrangler 4xe is selling like hotcakes. Personally though I see no reason to have a motor sitting up high and throwing off the incredibly low center of gravity EVs have. I know you've been off-roading for decades but please try not to roll end-over-end down the steep slope I'm going to drive up in my EV.

Well, luckily we're not living in a free-market society so the G wagon doesn't have to compete with a Yangwang U8. It's a fookin' submarine! The name tho... you'll be a bad joke target for every juvenile in town. LOL

We looked HARD at the G63 and G550. After loaners, looking and driving...got a GLS550, Design, Off Road (what ever package with lift and skid plates). Looking again, going to get a new GLS63 Ina few months probably. It weighs enough for a tax write off.

Off roading in an AMG GLS will definitely generate some laughs on the Jeep trail. My EQE SUV has an off-road mode but using it would be the end of all four of my AMG rims which apparently cost beaucoup bucks. I sometimes use the off-road info display anyways... shows altitude and GPS location and tilt angles and stuff like that.
I'm looking for a replacement I can actually beat on occasionally. Think it's going to be a Range Rover EV now though since Mercedes seems uncertain it wants to fully commit to our automotive future.

Yeah, but at the end of the day - the GLS CAN do 90% of what an OE G can do. It does lift, does have low range (12mph max) and can fit your knobby tires....to me, you would be the parriah. Every EhRab has a G Wagon, you could go rock crawling with seven adults in the car!
That said, ours has done Jeep trails in the Ocala National forest,
has forded 18" deep water (at the Orlando Airport during a hurricane) and has been more than capable than we have needed...

Living in FL it is not if there is an extended power outage, it is when and for how many weeks. Few years ago after a hurricane there were cars lined up at the Tesla stations for days and days (and many dead to the world that I guess were a nightmare). One of the Teslas burst into flame while supposedly JRA and burnt for hours (destroying the road)....sure, there are lines for gas after hurricanes as well, but, takes 10 minutes or so to fill even a Suburban and the driver pulls away.
The really freaky thing to me about Tesla. There was a plane crash right in front of the Tesla chargers....the NTSB got video from a car with out any notification what so ever to the owner of the car that took the video......just a bit o big brother there....

I think a large subset of the country is anti-EV without really having a valid reason for it. Yes I agree the Tesla fanboys are annoying and so are the holier than thou EV fans who claim everybody else is killing the environment, but in reality EVs are perfect commuter vehicles for people who can charge at home.
It’s much cheaper per mile and the “tank” is always full every morning.
I think it’s going to be like the current setup for years. I doubt we will see an EV only situation in our lifetimes because it will take decades for all the ice cars to stop being used. I like having both options in my garage.
