Opinion welcome: 2024 Cayenne Turbo vs 2025 g63
Hi all,
I am pretty new to this forum. I have been debating between buying a Porsche Cayenne Turbo and an MB g63. I like the new Cayenne based on the technology and PHEV for better gas consumption. However, I like the new G for the masculine design, comfort, and resale value.
I test-drove a few 2024 Cayenne but haven’t had a chance to test-drive a g class. Most of the places around my area don’t offer test drives for the G class.
so I am trying to listen to enthusiasts' opinions:
1) Why did you pick Porsche over other cars before?
2) How would you, best if you have both (Cayenne and g class), compare the 2?
thanks

I bet the Cayenne Turbo is a hoot to drive, but man it has some crushing depreciation.
I'm not sure I would describe the G63 as comfortable. It's good enough around town, but certainly not a vehicle I would choose to drive to eat miles on the highway.

this is one aspect I have a concern with G, which is the drivability on freeway and long haul commute. The fact that I moved from ‘24 model is because the ‘25 model should be more comfortable for long commute.

Not exactly the same, but I had a 2021 Porsche Macan before the 2023 G. The Porsche SUV seating position is more sports car low reclined while the G is very upright and tall. You will hop out of the G like a truck. So that comfort depends on what attack position you like. The Porsche SUV is definitely a sports car while the MB G is sports truck. The G is comfortable, but in a way that has command over other cars on the road. Do you want a sports car or a truck?

We take our 2024 G63 on monthly 5 and 10-hour each way road trips. Love the massaging seats, Apple car play, cabin has some wind noise but not so loud that you can’t hold a normal conversation. We love our G for road trips. Vehicle has full PPF and ceramic coating so not afraid of bugs and rocks! Knock on wood.

Rocks are my only concern on road trips. Fortunately, I believe our windshield PPF saved windshield #2 last week. Other than that nagging feeling that I'm going to crack another windshield, I'm personally very comfortable in ours on long drives.

We have our windshield tinted, and it seems as if the tint is on the outside of the windshield instead of on the inside. I think this saves us from cracking as where rocks have hit, there is a divot/bubble on the windshield but no cracked glass.

Yup the rocks on the windshield and paint chips/divots are what bother me the most on the highway. My 2021 had a lot of bad luck so since then I've avoided driving on the highway as much as I can.
Even if you are the only car around the G63 is still kinda ungainly on the highway. It's not going to be like a Range Rover or even an Escalade. I'm sure the '25 will be a bit better with the roof spoiler, etc but physics is physics.

Cayenne is most sports driving oriented vs the G. If I want to hit twisty roads take the Turbo. If I just want style and speed given the size then G. The G can’t hold a candle to the Turbo even on long sweeping interstate exchanges. G is just fine for longer trip just depends. Going to the beach and nothing exciting take the G. Mountain roads and twisty take the Turbo.
If you care to not lose $$ immediately get a G. A turbo will lose $50k in value in 2 years and keep dropping faster than a G.

I never thought of describing a G 63 as a "sports truck", but Iike it.
When someone asks me about my G 63, I usually tell them:
"It's my favorite car I've ever owned";
"It's like driving a 6,000 pound Ferrari";
"Great visibility, easy to drive"; (my wife is small...5' 2" 115 Lbs, and she likes driving it...she gets a lot of attention for some reason :-J
"Surprisingly comfortable - even for semi-annual 10 hour drives";
"So-so gas mileage... One Highway, Zero City"; (credit Rainier Wolfcastle)
"If I had to pick one car to drive for the duration, it would be a G 63."

I had Exoshield windshield protective film installed on my 2020 G 63. It helped, but if a rock is big enough and hits just right, it might crack the windshield (ask me how I know).
But, it did save me twice from rock hits that I know would have cracked the windshield without protective film.
BTW, I just got a 2024 G 63, and I'm going to have Exoshield installed again...or, maybe I'll try Xpel (they recently announced adding windshield protective film to their product line).

Cayenne Turbo for comfort and low profile, and the G for the weekend. Both great vehicle.

I just cracked my windshield after 1000 miles on odo. Is it common to hit rocks because of box design? I was surprised as how easily it cracked on only 1000 miles. Could be bad day but still

The upright windshield is definitely more prone to cracking from rocks. It happens to jeeps too.
You can try exoshield or clearplex which may help or do what I do and avoid driving on highways altogether.

Bummer. We use ours mostly for road trips and have 5k miles on it now. Texas is big! We had Expel put window tint on our front windshield which I believe is on the outside of the windshield. It has divits/bumps on the tint but the windshield itself is fine thus far.

I also have both. If I had to share the vehicle w a SO it would be a Cayenne as some women don’t like the G. My G is my daily driver, I have much more fun driving it...it also does not depreciate as much as the Cayenne.
Also I have two large dogs the G has more headroom for the dogs. Take mine on cross country (1800 mile) trips almost every month, Its surprisingly comfortable for despite the more upright seating.
