Put on some new Nitto Ridge Grapplers in 285/45/22

First of all thanks to Grit1, sweet63, and Ftedd for their input before my purchase and for others who shared their experiences with all-terrain tires in the many threads.

My G came with 21" summer tires, so while I don't need to run dedicated winters here, I liked the idea of running all-terrains for both utility and look. I started to rationalize that I in fact needed to get another set of rims--funny how quickly the mind can justify purchases. I looked at both 20's and 22's, and as luck would have it the dealer here connected me with one of their best customers who had a set of night package 22" take-offs that he was motivated to be rid of.

I really liked the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek's which are a new tire but they are 32.3" in diameter compared to the usual 32.1". I was spooked by that since the OEM 21's are 31.1" and the OEM 22's are 31.3". Decided to go for the next best thing with the Nitto Ridge Grapplers. As luck would have it a local Discount Tire just happened to have them in stock. They have a higher load rating but speed rating is Q (99 mph). I'll have to watch myself on the highway. Fortunately the lowest parking deck I go to is 7' so should be fine with the extra inch in height.

Spent some time this morning putting them on in my garage. Those hub center caps are a pain to put on. Very initial first drive impression is that they are definitely louder than the summer tires. There seems to be no rub from what I can tell, but it's awfully close.

Discount Tire gives me 30 days to make sure I like them, if not I can trade them for something else so will see how it goes. I'm going to store the 21's and put them back right before trade-in whenever that is.

Thanks! Took it for a ~25 mile commute today. Handling feels the same, maybe a tad rougher. Road noise is louder but not to a bothersome degree. Think they are keepers!

Looks nice! You’re going to do some off-roading? Would be great to know how they hold up

Let's be honest -- does anyone here really do any serious off-roading with a $6,000 set of alloy wheels and short sidewall (5") tires?

Beautiful, nice looking tires! So there is no rubbing at full turns without spacer, cutting inner wall or lift, correct? Since I have the same 22" wheels, I'd really appreciate if you can confirm that one more time. I've been a fan of Ridge Grapplers, looking forward to your words.

There's no good places to off-road around here but I'd love to take it on a trail. I'm jealous of some of the trails I see out near LA where there's good off-roading and more importantly no trees to scratch the paint.

So far the tires seem to fit without needing a lift or spacers. I need to make sure by having somebody turn the steering wheel as I stand outside watching, but after driving about 50 miles on them I don't see any evidence of wear on the black plastic pieces. I'll report back!

Cool! Thanks for your feedback. I'm just clicks away to finish ordering those tires, please let us know when you get a chance!

From what I can tell it just misses the plastic. Probably better evidence is I've driven it a few hundred miles and have not seen any signs of rubbing on the plastic. Others have said they have had no issues with 285/45/22's which are 32.1" in diameter.

For anybody looking at these tires be aware that the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek's are 32.3" and will likely rub.

This is at full lock and from the wheel well and below.

Thanks for sharing the pictures! Good to know they don't rub on the plastic even at full turn position. Will order mine soon.

I put Continental Viking Contact 7 snow tires (285/45 22) on my 2020 G 63. I have put 5,000 miles on these tires, and they don't rub at all. BTW, I took a close look (and feel) at the plastic material in the wheel wells that come close to the tires. This material is fairly pliable and it seems to be installed in such a way that it would give a little if a tire were to rub against it.

So far after putting a few hundred miles pretty happy with the tire. Looks great and the road noise is bearable. Haven't tried to figure out any impact on gas mileage but let's just say it's still poor haha.

My neighbor pointed out an advantage of going with a slightly larger diameter tire - the odometer will read a little bit slower as the wheels have fewer revolutions per mile.

A modest 1" diameter increase will result in only about 3% error -- your truck will show only 100,000 miles when you've actually driven 103,000 miles. Others who lift their trucks and add 3" of tire diameter are looking at more significant errors on the order of 10%. Would you need to disclose this when you sell the vehicle? Who knows? The more immediate issue is the speedo reading being low. 16.5 mph probably won't get you ticketed in a school zone, but 83 mph might cause you some grief on the interstate.

Thanks for the info. Haven't looked and felt the plastic material closely, but hopefully won't have an issue since OP drove a few hundred miles on them already with no issue!

They look nice. My experience with those tires...the road noise in 5000 miles or so will be unbearable...like the sensation of worn wheel bearings. I hope I'm wrong.

This has been my experience with tires of any brand having aggressive knobby treads. They perform well for their intended off-road low speed use, but paved highway speed use gradually causes the tread blocks to wear in such a way that they rumble, and scheduled balancing/rotating does nothing to prevent this. I changed out my G550's OE tires to Yokohama Geolander A/Ts, not for appearance but for performance (Pirelli A/S tires in Colorado are a joke). The Yokos lack the coveted "boss" appearance of the Nittos, but what do I care? I can't see them while I'm driving anyway, but I can hear and feel them -- and they don't rumble after 10K miles of wear.

Interested in putting nitto grapplers on my 22’s as well. Noticed they come in 305/40r22 as well. Anybody have any feedback on this size vs going with 285/45r22? Thanks

305/40/22 has a smaller diameter so that's a plus. It's a bit wider though. I think a lot of people here looked at the various sizes and for some reason most recommend 285/45/22.

As for road noise we will see! If it's annoying I'll be sure to report back.
