2025 G63 Gearbox Issue

I have just picked up the car this week, 100 km in, the gearbox started jerking on the downshifts, from 3rd gear to 2nd gear. I’m pretty disappointed as i had the same issue with an older 2016 G63. Also a friend got a S63 2024 and same thing happened to him.

Is someone else experiencing this ? Does anyone have any tips for solving this ? In the old model i tried to reset the gearbox but it didn’t help at all.

I had a 21 G 63 and now a 24 G 63. I haven’t experienced any issues with the gearbox in either G G 63. I’m going to order a 25 as soon as my dealer receives an allocation. Is this the same 9 speed gearbox as my 24?

My 2024 jerks sometimes around 25 mph. Haven't had this issue before in previous vehicles. It otherwise drives fine and it's not every day so I'm not going to worry about it for now.

The issue is that it feels like a kick in the gearbox, it’s subtle but i’m afraid it’s going to get worse. It looks like the gearbox timing is not right and it slams it into gear .

Did the car have the issue since the start ? Did it get worse with time or it stayed the same ?

I had same issue with a C 200 2016 and they changed the gearbox at 20k kms. Wondering if this is the solution for this car as well ( it’s fair to mention the C class was almost impossible to drive)

It's had the issue from the start. It sounds like your issue. I'm not technical enough to know what exactly is happening but it feels like a slight pause and jerk like something mis-fired or mis-timed. Whenever it happens it's always at 25 mph so I imagine it's always at a certain transmission shift. It's also only at slower speeds like in a neighborhood while accelerating. If I push the pedal at a light there's no issue with quick shifting.

Since the car otherwise drives fine and I'm hoping to get a 2025 myself before year's end I'm not going to sweat it, but if my new 2025 had it I would definitely take it into the shop.

My 2018 E63S does the exact same thing and it bothers me a lot, and the dealer did nothing.

Which drive mode do you use? My 2019 E63S did the same on the 2-1 downshift, but only in Sport+. I initially thought it was the ceramic brakes grabbing, but it was the transmission jerking. It was never resolved, I was told it's characteristic of the transmission.

It does not do it all the time but from 1-2second, but it does it on all the modes, if you have it on Sport+ more often,

You gonna have to let the transmission adapt first. Do not use anything other than C during the break-in period. You will skip steps otherwise and the transmission won't adapt cleanly. Jerks in the transmission can almost always be traced back to incomplete adaptations. AMG is pretty specific about the break-in of their cars. You are best served to follow it. FYI, the S63 your friend has uses a different transmission. The G63, GLE63 and GLS63 have torque converters, whereas the other 63 models have a wet startup clutch. AMG Speedshift TCT transmission vs. AMG Speedshift MCT transmission.

You also don't really wanna tool around town in S+ even after the break-in. Otherwise your transmission will never really learn your moderate driving from spirited driving. The instructors at the AMG Driving Academy were very adamant about that. S, S+ and Race should only be used for fast and spirited driving. Around town and moderate driving should always be done in C, and as said all driving should be done in C during the break-in to let the transmission fully adapt first.

The 9-speed MCT in my C63S coupe also had jerky downshifts at first. Specifically it insisted on downshifting from 2nd to first before coming to a stop, which was always jerky. After a while and plenty of around town driving in C, it stopped doing it and now it stays in 2nd until the car has come to a full stop and the jerky downshift is completely gone. The MCT due to having a clutch does require some throttle modulation to drive it smoothly, but nothing I'm not used from driving manual transmissions for over 20 years. These are performance cars, not Toyota Camrys. BTW, I also do all my spirited driving exclusively in M as not to confuse the transmission adaptation, so the automatic mode has adapted very well to my moderate around town driving w/o getting confused between spirited and moderate driving. I even use M on the highways. Only leave it in automatic on the highway if I use DISTRONIC, otherwise I use I* where I have the transmission set to M. To me, AMGs, at least those with the MCT transmission are meant to be driven in M.

In summary, give it time to get through the break-in period and stick to the instructions. I know it's hard, but stay away from S and S+ until it's broken in. Let it learn your normal driving style and adapt to it.

I currently have a 24 without any problems and have a 10/1 build date for a 25. Did they give you something to drive until the new one arrives?. My dealership is telling me mid to late November delivery to the dealership.

My dealership gave me an SUV until MB USA sorted it out. So MBUSA repurchased my car back, and my dealership promised a new allocation and they are doing it at MSRP. So i am ok with it, though its just painful to have a G and not have it for another 6 months...

So, did they give you something to drive this whole time? My 24 is built much better than my 21 was. My 25 has a 10/1 build date. I hope your 25 doesn’t have any problems. A girl rear ended me at a stop light in my 21. Otherwise, I would have waited for the 25. I think I’m going to trade every year. That was the original plan until covid hit and the supply chain issues/ microchip shortages. Good luck!
