Hi all,
So about two weeks ago my wife's 2021 G550 with about 38k miles on it had a check engine light. My wife's car was just about 45 days out of warranty. I used an ODB scanner and it showed code P0128 "Coolant thermostat - coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature". Called the dealer who said that the thermostat has an extended warranty on it apparently but they didn't have any in stock. We scheduled an appointment and the code disappeared for another couple weeks.
Fast forward to a day ago and the check engine light showed again. I fully expected to see P0128 but saw P06DA as well which was "Engine oil pressure control - circuit open" which is related to the oil solenoid valve which regulates oil pressure in the car -- particularly at low idle and is also a somewhat maligned/controversial part from the E class and some other class mercedes due to questions of it's value.
In any event, this part IS NOT covered under warranty and mercedes claims that they need to remove and reinstall the engine in order to replace the solenoid AND the wiring harness to the tune of $11,655.00+tx. Needless to say this seems VERY expensive to me and I feel a bit taken advantage of on a car that's only a few years old without a ton of mileage.
So to the broader group of experts out there I would question is the full "remove and reinstall" necessary or can they drop the subframe as I understand may be possible to do on other vehicles? I know this isn't reliable but I did ask chatgpt (surprising how convincing the answer is even if it's questionable) and the breakdown it gave me was below:
Item Cost Estimate
Engine R/R Labor (Remove/Replace) $5,500 - $7,500
Replace Oil Control Valve $300 - $400
Replace Harness Section $300 - $600
Fluids, Seals, Gaskets $500 - $700
Diagnostics (if they added it) $200 - $400
Total Expected Range $7,500 - $9,500
Hoping someone out there can help understand if the $11,655.00 quote is excessive. Thanks in advance!
