DIY Review: FitCamX Dash Cam Install, First Impressions, Review
That’s exactly why I wanted something discrete and reliable. My old dash cam was on its last legs—random reboots, SD card errors, and just showing its age—so it was time for an upgrade. While researching, I came across FitCamX, and with a new addition to the garage, the timing worked out perfectly. Fortunately, I’ve never had to use footage for insurance, but with scams like this Belt Parkway staged crash scheme making headlines, it feels smart to be prepared.
I ended up ordering a forward- and rear-facing unit and decided to tackle the install myself. The kit included clear instructions and even the plastic pry tools. I started by removing the rearview mirror surround, then tucked the wire neatly into the crevices of the seams along the headliner on the driver’s side, down through the door gaskets, into the rear hatch, and mounted the rear camera dead center. Clean, simple, and much more confidence-inspiring than the old setup in my other AMG.
Overall, the install took about an hour and a half. The biggest challenge was the rear camera—while not technically difficult, it required a lot of patience to pull factory-sealed trim away from its original position without damaging anything. Once both cameras were in place, I powered it up to make sure the hardwire kit wasn’t triggering any dash errors. Thankfully, it worked perfectly.
Initial setup with the iPhone app was a little slow, and the interface itself lags when scrolling through footage history, but it does the job. Functionality is solid, even if the software experience isn’t the fastest.
As an overall score, I’d rate the FitCamX dash cam 3.5/5.
Pros:
- Very clean and discrete, OEM-Plus look once installed
- Straightforward instructions and included tools
- Both front and rear camera integration available
- No error codes or electrical issues with hardwire install
- Videos are crystal clear 4K front and 1080P rear
- Reliable recording once set up
- Rear camera install requires patience and careful trim removal
- App interface is slow and clunky when reviewing footage
- Initial pairing/setup with phone takes a while
- Not the most user-friendly software compared to competitors

I have one in my kid's car and it already saved me some money as he lightly bumped a car in the parking lot (no damage) and the parent of the other car the next day tried to tell me my kid caused a large dent on the other side of his kid's car. Was pretty satisfying to show him the video on my phone through Fitcam's wifi connection and see how quickly he backtracked.
